Driving Photonics Forward with Standardization   At asphericon, we've always believed in shaping the future through collaboration. Just as I recently emphasized the importance of democratizing optics, we recognize that standardization is a crucial aspect of technological progress in photonics.   The photonics landscape is rapidly evolving as many creative minds converge on tomorrow's applications. Consequently, adjustments in terminology, requirements, interfaces, and test methods are inevitable.   In July of this year, our Chairman Advisory Group within ISO/TC 172 met to discuss current issues and developments. Navigating the Photonics Technology Transfer Two weeks ago, I attended the European Optical Society Annual Meeting (EOSAM) conference in Dijon, France. I had the privilege of participating in a thought-provoking panel discussion with industry luminaries, moderated by Oliver Fähnle, Chairman of EOS's Industrial Committee, and Jérémy Picot-Clémente, PhD, Technology Manager at EPIC - EUROPEAN PHOTONICS INDUSTRY CONSORTIUM. Our discussion was about how to successfully transfer know-how from R&D to industry with a focus on challenges and strategies involved in transformative processes. I had the opportunity to share our journey at asphericon, where we set out to make aspherical systems through digital manufacturing. I shared how we were able to automate processes and enhance the quality of a manufacturing process that was deemed too variable for digitization. For us, building trust in the market was paramount, and we achieved this by curating knowledge and providing training worldwide. The insights we gained from this journey were enlightening, offering practical strategies and tips for managing key knowledge in photonics. A big thank you to all podium participants, including Gauthier Briere, Samuel Bucourt, Pierre Brochard, and Jacques Cochard, who shared their unique perspectives, adding depth and breadth to the discussion. Finally it starts!   We announce together with our partners the start of the future shaping "MEGA-EUV" project.   AMPHOS GmbH is cooperating with the Universität Hamburg, Class 5 Photonics , Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY and partners from the semiconductor industry as part of the "MEGA-EUV" project. The aim of the project is to develop a high-performance, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) beam source for the inspection of microchips. The project is being funded by Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung as part of the program “Neuartige photonische Werkzeuge für Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft” (new photonic tools for economy and society). The goal of this funding initiative is to support the transfer of innovative research results in the key technology #photonics and thus making important contributions to innovative strength and competitiveness as well as to overcoming social challenges in the areas of health, digitalization, and sustainability. This is an interesting new project to develop a #secondarysource and one should mention the meaning of the acronym MEGA-EUV: "Milliwatt-level efficient gas harmonic EUV source". Furthermore, it is worth to mention that AMPHOS GmbH is part of TRUMPF which produces the EUV source for ASML already. Which is making several 100 W of incoherent light. The new source will make some Milliwatt of coherent EUV radiation.

Light in sight – the over two-billion-euro Photonics industry in Finland. According to the recent Photonics Industry in Finland survey, the industry's estimated turnover in Finland already exceeds two billion euros. Compared to the previous study conducted in 2020, the Photonics industry has grown by more than 50 percent. In 2022, SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, the umbrella organization of the world's photonics industry, estimated that the value of the fields and services enabled by photonics exceed two trillion euros globally. They range from high-performance computing to industrial sensing to extended reality systems. The importance of integrated photonic solutions has been recognised by the European Chips Act. The paper has been created response to a 2022 request from the European Commission, seeking input ahead of the €43 billion #ChipsAct initiative, and was presented to the European Commission, pointing out trends, needs and R&D&I priorities.
