Semiconductor Industry | Inovation Technology | Si Photonics

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the European Conference on Integrated Optics (ECIO) 2024 in the beautiful city of Aachen (my home city). Representing SMART Photonics company, I found the conference to be an outstanding event filled with engaging talks and stimulating discussions. It was a great opportunity to reconnect with many of my former colleagues from AMO GmbH and Black Semiconductor (Dr. Cedric Huyghebaert), as well as meet many new people. I thoroughly enjoyed talking and sharing ideas with esteemed professionals such as Prof. Martin Schell and Dr. Norbert Keil ( from Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI , Berlin, Germany), Prof. Lars Zimmermann (from IHP, Germany), Dr. Milos Nedeljkovic (University of Southampton, UK), Prof. Michael Strain (University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK), Prof. Anna Lena Schall-Giesecke (Fraunhofer IMS, Germany) and Dr. Jing Zhang (imec, Belgium), among many others. The discussions covered the latest advances in PIC technologies, and one of the key takeaways for me was the realization that no single platform can perform all tasks, from creating photons to their manipulation and detection. Instead, Heterogeneous Integration stands out as a promising approach, allowing us to leverage the best functionalities from each platform and integrate them seamlessly. Overall, ECIO 2024 was a truly enriching experience, and I look forward to applying the insights gained to our work at SMART. Thanks also to dear Pedram Hosseini for providing me these photos!
