In the coming months, Sentinel-2C will gradually take over from its counterpart, Sentinel-2A, which is scheduled to retire after more than nine years in space. This transition will ensure data continuity for the many users of Copernicus services. Sentinel-2 satellite data are essential for monitoring land use, land cover changes, soil sealing, and land management. The data also support agriculture, forestry, and the response to natural disasters such as floods, fires, landslides, and erosion, while playing a role in humanitarian aid efforts. Additionally, Sentinel-2 contributes to environmental observation in coastal areas, as well as the monitoring of glaciers, ice, and snow. Mapping the natural disturbance risk to protective forests across the European Alps (OA) https://botany.fyi/xqxjn6 Stritih et al combined satellite-based data on forest disturbances from 1986 to 2020 with data on key forest structural characteristics (cover and height) from spaceborne lidar (GEDI), and used ensemble models to predict disturbance probabilities and post-disturbance forest structure based on topographic and climatic predictors. #Botany #PlantScience

Learn how Enerjisa Üretim leverages Esri's Imagery & Remote Sensing Capabilities to preserve Wildlife and natural habitat in Turkey. In rocky and steep terrain, the information obtained with satellite transmitters and GPS could not be interpreted. When remote monitoring began to track the behavior of wild goats, it was desired to further refine the information obtained with transmitters and GPS. 🗺 Prolonged public access to high-resolution rainforest satellite images 🗺   Our agreement with the satellite program providers is extended until January 23, 2025. This extension ensures that users will not lose access to satellite monitoring of tropical forests before a more long-term solution is in place.   Since 2020, we have offered users worldwide free access to high-resolution and analysis-ready images of the world's tropical regions. The images are provided by Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) and partners Airbus and Planet.   We announced earlier this year a public tender for a new contract on satellite data for four years with the possibility of two extensions of one year. The process of entering a new long-term agreement is proceeding as planned and will not be affected by this extension.   ⭐ Since the program’s launch, tens of thousands of users around the world have utilized free, high-resolution images of the tropics. "Satellite data can be used in a wide range of fields, including climate change studies, maritime surveillance and the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity. Now, suppose the data were used to help keep whales safe. This is what the Canadian Space Agency | Agence spatiale canadienne, in co-operation with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Transport Canada, has called for with the launch of the smartWhales initiative. As a result of a request for proposals published in June 2020, five Canadian companies have been awarded contracts under the smartWhales initiative to advance solutions, using satellite data, to protect North Atlantic right whales (NARWs) in Canadian waters." #satellitedata #earthobservation #whales

We are excited to share our latest publication, where we compare functional and structural biodiversity in agroforestry systems using Sentinel-2 and LiDAR data. In this research, we introduce novel ShannonF and GiniF indices to evaluate functional biodiversity across diverse ecoregions in Colombia and Tanzania. Did you know rabbit burrows were visible from space? 🐇 Very proud and excited to share that my undergraduate project has been finally published in the Journal of Coastal Conservation 🎉 (https://lnkd.in/gb2TAEhZ) The coming together of almost a year of work between Prof. Helene Burningham and myself at UCL and Emer Magee, ranger at Sheskinmore (Rep of Ireland). What's the fuss about? Through a case study based in Ireland, we prove that remote sensing (ie, satellite images, like on your Google Maps satellite view) can be a practical alternative to detect and monitor rabbit populations in coastal dunes through the detection of their burrows. 🏝 Coastal environments are threatened world-wide by rising sea levels and things like urbanisation. Despite their cuteness, rabbits are a widespread invasive species that also can alter the delicate balance of coastal dunes.
