I'm proud of Houston for leading the way. Kelly Young & I sit on Midtown Management's Board together. We had a recent conversation about what Houston's unhoused population needs & it boils down to 3 things: 1️⃣ Affordable Housing - like REAL affordable housing 🏘 2️⃣ Getting Drug Dealers off the streets - they target the unhoused which makes getting them off the street EVEN harder. 3️⃣ Funding - we had a ton funding via COVID, but that's now GONE. It costs ~$1200/mo to house someone, there are less than 5,000 unhoused folks in HTX, that's ~$72M annually...That's NOT a huge number. AND I'm going to add a Number 4️⃣ Talk to everyBODY about this | REGISTER to Vote | Vote | Write a letter to your local city council person | DO Something - don't think it's not your problem too. https://lnkd.in/gpX93tH6

Isaac Yablo is Senior Advisor for Community Safety for the City of Boston. He moves seamlessly across scales, from city-wide strategy to on-scene response. In his work, we watched how well Isaac sees people, where they are coming from, and the structures that surround them: the not visible things that are driving visible behaviors. Isaac has shown us what it can mean to be seen. Read our 2023 Year of Stories here: https://lnkd.in/gGt_nfRn The project: We worked with Isaac in co-designing an updated protocol for the city’s response to incidents of community violence. Great insights were shared at the FOCUS St. Louis event! Former St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay, Former St. Louis County Council Member Colleen Wasinger, and Former President & CEO of Bi-State Development and Mayor of Chesterfield John Nations provided valuable nuggets on finding common ground through civil discourse. Here are some key takeaways from the event: 1. Building relationships is crucial to achieving success. 2. Working across party lines is necessary for progress. 3. Disagreements can be productive, as long as they are respectful. 4. Avoid seeking attention in a negative way. 5. Politics should be about the business of people, not outside agendas. 6. Our young people need more ways to connect and get involved. It was good to hear the discussion on how we can improve civil discourse in our community. Thank you to Yemi A. Akande-Bartsch, Ph.D and Jody Sowell Sowell for facilitating these important discussions. Let's continue to strive for civil discourse and finding common ground. #FOCUSStLouis #CivilDiscourse #CommunityDiscussions

My latest column for Police1: a new fellowship program wants more applications from rural law enforcement and corrections officers. You know how your area is damaged by opiate abuse, and you probably have at least one idea for fixing that. The Reaching Rural Initiative exists to help you make that concept a reality.
Thank you Kathleen Dias and Police1 for covering the Reaching Rural Initiative. Reaching Rural Fellow Denise Waff of Prince George County, Virginia did an excellent job sharing the story of how the program has helped her community. https://lnkd.in/e25xZSAA

#CityofAuburn Reevaluate outreach: Consolidate efforts and align missions. Bring outreach work into the city government and pay people livable wages. Less turnover means better outcomes. Strengthen shelters: Channel resources into shelters, improve conditions, and increase staff compensation to curtail turnover. Make shelters spaces of growth and transition. Stop the flow: Implement programs that intervene before eviction occurs, offering support in exchange for participation. Lessen the inflow of new homelessness cases. Essential services: Integrate essential services within shelters. Empower individuals to access health care, employment resources, and social services without stepping outside. It’s time we recognize our own role in shaping the outcome of homelessness and redouble our efforts to provide opportunities for change. We need to acknowledge our shared responsibility in perpetuating homelessness. We need to diagnose the true issue. We need policy made in the name of compassion to meet the reality of accountability. If not, how much longer can we pretend we’re talking about supportive housing? Kent Hay is the director of anti-homelessness for the city of Auburn.
