On Thursday, we hosted the commemoration of the 22nd anniversary of the formal end to the rescue and recovery operations at Ground Zero. Led by the ceremonial units from the FDNY, NYPD, New York City Department of Sanitation, New York City Department of Correction, and The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, members of the community gathered to recognize the thousands who worked tirelessly at the World Trade Center site in the days and weeks that followed the attacks and to honor the thousands of individuals who are suffering or have died from illness or injury as a result. During the ceremony, guests heard the unique perspectives of Phil Alvarez, 9/11 advocate, and Catherine McVay Hughes, former Chair of Manhattan Community Board 1. Beth Hillman, #911Museum President and CEO acknowledged the tremendous 9-month effort that involved thousands of individuals, including those from the New York City departments of Design & Construction, Sanitation, Correction, Buildings, and Parks, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, and the Transit Workers Union; the Red Cross and the Salvation Army; and hundreds of buildings and trades—ironworkers, boilermakers, electricians, teamsters, operating and structural engineers, sheet metal workers, carpenters, laborers; the U.S. National Guard, military personnel, and so many more.
