The UCaaS Market Share Leader is… @DaveMichels , TalkingPointz.com A Blog from Dave Michels The competition among major communications companies is fierce. Cisco, RingCentral, Microsoft, and Zoom are vying for market dominance. Yet, as they report their metrics, a troubling trend emerges: the metrics they announce appear inconsistent. Their claims are more like a sales or marketing pitch than objective data. What We Are Told I assume that determining market share in some markets is pretty easy. Comparing Coke to Pepsi seems like it should be easy. They are both public companies, and they sell similar products in similar-sized units (cans). It’s not easy in enterprise communications. There’s no objective way to know what platforms are actually being used. Surveys are far from exact, so analysts have to rely upon what the vendors tell us. This introduces three big issues. Firstly, it’s all self-reported data. Secondly, the vendors all have different ways of packaging their products and slicing their data, making it difficult to compare numbers. Thirdly, announced results can be difficult to validate. Many companies don’t provide supporting data, and it can be hard to reconcile with available published metrics. In the past few weeks, Microsoft, RingCentral, and Zoom shared some difficult to compare figures. Microsoft announced that 20 million Teams users are “PSTN enabled” and that it “surpassed” one million Teams Rooms (cumulative or online?). Zoom announced it has sold a cumulative two million Zoom Rooms. RingCentral promoted results from Synergy Research that concluded RingCentral is the global leader in “World Wide Subscribers Seats” with nearly 6 million subscribers, positioned well ahead of Cisco and Microsoft. Zoom’s cumulative number of two million Zoom Rooms does not tell us how many are still in use. Microsoft Teams and Zoom room hardware are often compatible and can be switched between services. I believe Teams has more users than Zoom, but Zoom has been selling rooms for much longer than Microsoft. Although Microsoft reported Teams had 320 million monthly active users in FY24 Q1, adoption of Teams telephony has lagged. Twenty million PSTN-enabled users is a new milestone. An enabled user could mean the PSTN is actually configured or simply licensed. Organizations can become PSTN-enabled by purchasing services directly from Microsoft or obtaining carrier services from a ... @DaveMichels TalkingPointz.com https://wp.me/p2Q636-K2w
