Chat GPT was released one year ago and to reflect on how it has impacted writing education and our work, we’re sharing 826’s Position Statement on Generative AI. This statement shares 826’s ethos with the public that writing is as much about the process as about the product itself. With the release of ChatGPT and similar AI technologies, writing educators worry that this new technology may signal the end of writing instruction altogether. However, at 826, we believe that writing is an irreplaceable tool in cultivating citizens who can advocate for themselves and their community. We are launching our Authorship Authentication System, which discovers ghostwriting by AI or other humans in the students’ writing, thereby contributing to upholding Academic Integrity. "You Detector" (not AI detector). We consider ChatGPT a non-human ghostwriter. Our solution is authenticating students' original writing, rather than focusing on detecting text written by other humans or generative AI. How are we doing this? We are automating research-based methods of comparing newly submitted essays with the students’ historical authentic writing. Interesting note on how to write about AI.
I've been thinking about the new Associated Press guidelines to avoid referring to AI in ways that could imply it has thoughts or feelings. I have also been avoiding phrasing that implies intent: "It WANTS you to enter more information," for example. Instead, I try to write something like "You may need to enter more information." I've used that kind of "wants" wording for computers without thinking about it my whole life. The reason more precise wording matters now is that it's the first time we've widely had systems that could be mistaken for being human or having sentience — and it's important that we as writers don't contribute to the misunderstanding of how these systems work. #AI #chatGPT #writing #communication #LanguageChange
