In the past decades, and notably the last few years, #droughts have severely impacted various interconnected socio-economic sectors and ecosystems across the UE. These impacts encompass, among others, extensive losses in both #agriculture, challenges and constraints in #public #water supply, disruptions in inland shipping, diminished production of hydropower and thermoelectric #energy, impaired functioning of #ecosystems, and implications for the #tourism industry. Therefore, it is crucial to better prepare for future #drought events in #Europe by knowing the causes, spatial patterns, and dynamics of drought #risks. In response to this need, our researchers have been working on the 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗔𝘁𝗹𝗮𝘀 within the #EDORA initiative, mapping hotspots and risk drivers in different systems and regions of the EU. The importance of this #Atlas stems from providing a detailed and disaggregated perspective on the risks posed by droughts to societies and ecosystems, with a focus on agriculture, public water supply, energy, river transportation, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. 🌟RESIST Spotlight Series: Eastern Macedonia & Thrace Today, we are highlighting 1 of the 8 twinning regions of the RESIST project: Eastern Macedonia & Thrace. Its leading region is Southwest Finland which has similar challenges, but more experience in climate change adaptation. Currently, Eastern Macedonia & Thrace face severe floods💧and soil erosion.🍂 Did you know that Eastern Macedonia and Thrace have several Natura 2000 sites🌱vital to the European environment? However, the region is subject to increasing climate change-related problems and disasters that are affecting these significant forest🌳 and aquatic🐠 ecosystems, as well as its urban areas. The RESIST project in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace will implement expertise from Southwest Finland, focusing on the Laspias and Kosynthos basins. The Nile River was the lifeblood of ancient Egypt, providing water for irrigation, transportation, and sustenance. Its annual floods were essential for agriculture, depositing fertile silt that enriched the soil and allowed for bountiful harvests. However, these floods could also be destructive, inundating villages, destroying crops, and displacing people. Despite the potential for destruction, the Egyptians learned to live with the Nile's floods, developing sophisticated systems for predicting and managing them. They built dikes and canals to control water flow and developed agricultural techniques to exploit the fertile silt left behind by the floods. Nevertheless, global warming and recent droughts and floods threaten large populations along the Nile Valley. Understanding how such a large river will respond to an invigorated hydrological cycle is therefore a pressing issue. Insights can be gained by studying past periods with wetter and warmer conditions, such as the North African Humid Period eleven to six thousand years ago. This has been achieved by a team of cool scientists, led by Cécile Blanchet from Helmholtz-Centre Potsdam - German Research Centre GFZ. This is a really important study that gives some hints about the potential threats of increased flood frequency of the Nile River in a warmer climate. The recent release of the seasonal weather forecast by the Kenya Meteorological Department for the long rains (March to May) 2024 indicates an expectation of above-average rainfall across most regions of Kenya. Responding to this forecast, this week 10-15 March, the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT (ABC), in collaboration with partners such as the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) through Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project and the #CGIAR's Livestock and Climate Initiative are actively engaged with the Kenya Meteorological Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, County Governments and various stakeholders spanning nine counties: Kwale, Kilifi, Taita Taveta, Makueni, Machakos, Kitui, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Baringo in Participatory Scenario Planning (PSP) workshops. Our primary objective? To facilitate improved access, utilization, and informed decision-making regarding climate information through Participatory Scenario Planning. Reflecting on this effort, we're thrilled to share insights from our PSP workshop focusing on Embu County: 🌧️ Rainfall Forecast: The outlook for March-April-May (MAM) 2024 season brings good tidings for Embu County. Normal to above-normal rainfall is expected in upper altitude zones, particularly on the slopes of Mount Kenya, while most parts of the middle and lower altitude zones can expect normal rainfall patterns. Seasonal rainfall onset is projected between March 15th and 28th, 2024, with cessation expected between May 22nd and June 4th. Distribution is predicted to be fair to good, both in timing and spatially. The peak of rainfall is anticipated in April 2024, offering a critical period for agricultural planning and activities. 🌡️ Temperature Outlook: Warmer than average temperatures are forecasted over the entire county, necessitating measures to mitigate potential heat stress on crops and livestock. This collaborative effort brings together scientists from the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT and International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), alongside county meteorological officers, KMD officers, traditional forecasters, farmers, and other stakeholders. The goal is to empower farmers with accurate climate information thus fostering resilience in agriculture. Even more concerning, 67% of the country’s agricultural landscape is affected, posing significant challenges to our food security and ecosystem stability. The "Worse-Case Climate" scenario (SSP585) shows a substantial rise in drought severity, with the area affected by extreme droughts projected to increase by up to 80%. Exciting news! My research paper, "Deforestation detection and reforestation potential due to natural disasters—A case study of floods," has just been published in Remote Sensing Applications: Society and Environment (RSASE) Journal! The focus of this work is on using unsupervised learning methods to detect deforestation caused by the 2022 floods in Pakistan and also identifying potential areas for reforestation in the country.
