Dan Goldin Here is one approach to strap boosters to America's space economy. We need a cheap first-stage rocket that reaches 15 km/s without nuclear fuel or anything complicated, simple design. This wouldn't be capable of transporting humans, but it doesn't matter. Humans can get to Moon with slower, more comfortable means, then depart from the Moon. No aerodynamic heating, no significant gravity to overcome. Off to Mars. How can we obtain this rocket anyway? Easy. 🌌 Is NewSpace entering a Phase of Disillusionment? 🚀 According to Seraphim Space's latest publication, there's a noticeable decline in investments, primarily due to reduced funding for new satellite platform projects. 📉 Gartner's Hype Cycle suggests that innovations typically go through a disillusionment phase after a peak of inflated expectations. Some companies persist through this, either leading to a slump or a slope of enlightenment where the innovation starts to achieve success. 📈✨ NewSpace seems to be following this trend. The profitability of these platforms is taking longer to demonstrate to investors. So, how can we ensure that the disillusionment phase is as short and shallow as possible? 🤔 One reason for the delay in profitability is the difficulty for space players to get widespread adoption of their satellite data. 📡 To address this, it's crucial to strengthen the link between these space actors and potential end-users, increasing awareness of the technology's potential and understanding their on-the-ground needs. 🌍🔗 Developing specialized products with a strong value proposition for end-users is essential. Nowadays, attention is shifting to the use of cislunar space region based on various advantages it offers such as the presence of abundant natural and untapped resources such as water, Helium-3, rare earth metals, and regolith, and a region for high surveillance capabilities. Several cislunar space emerging technologies are being designed for cislunar space region, a large volume of outer space that is underutilized. Examples are cislunar space on-orbit servicing, cislunar space transportation, Lunar Landers and Rovers, Lunar Resource Utilization Technology, Space-Based Manufacturing and Assembly, Cislunar Habitats and Outposts, In-Space Fueling and Power Generation. Presently, cislunar space on-orbit servicing technologies are under development. The space-based technologies are aimed at performing in-orbit activities such as spacecraft inspection, rendezvous and docking operations, satellite's position, orientation, and operational status change, and a host of others. Cislunar space infrastructure and transportation systems technologies are being developed to provide regular movement of people, cargo, and propellant among locations in cislunar space. Based on the expensive nature of launching materials into the cislunar space, In-situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) technologies are being developed. This is very important for the reduction of the cost of cislunar space exploration. The lunar soil natural resources such as oxygen, silicon, aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium, and titanium are very useful to be used as building materials for the lunar structures and habitats. As a result, emerging technologies are being developed to extract those materials. Some private space companies, such as Astrobotic, are developing lunar landers and rovers emerging technologies to further advance human exploration of the cislunar space region.
