Many NNSA projects to modernize the research and production infrastructure for the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile will cost more than $100 million each and $34 billion collectively. As of March 2023, projects in the construction phase collectively exceeded their cost estimates by over $2 billion and surpassed their collective schedules by almost 10 years. Our new report looks at this portfolio of projects and provides a performance snapshot.

Forty years ago, findings on the global climatic effects of nuclear war first introduced the prospect of “nuclear winter.” In the decades since, the consequences of nuclear use have remained only incidental to considerations of nuclear policy. The paper provides historical context and describes how the scientific revelation of “nuclear winter” was first received by the U.S. defense community in the 1980s. It sheds light on the debate that emerged over how U.S. nuclear policy should account for the implications of the global effects of nuclear use, as many of the questions posed then are even more important to consider in the context of today’s interconnected and economically interdependent world. The complexity of modern global systems creates new vulnerabilities and introduces risks of cascading societal, economic, industrial, and political failures that countries are dangerously unprepared to address. We have attended the 52nd Meeting of the International Nuclear Regulators’ Association (INRA) this afternoon which exchanges regulatory policy perspectives and to further nuclear safety and security standards on a global level. INRA is made up of nine member countries – Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. On this occasion hosted by Germany, the meeting featured updates on the conflict in Ukraine and any potential risks to civil nuclear facilities before the main presentation and discussion on the topic of decommissioning and dismantling nuclear sites, with particular focus on how to maintain robust safety culture during these periods and to best sustain high levels of expertise. #IAEAGC #nuclearregulation #international #collaboration

🗞 Fresh off the press: the latest Don't Bank on the Bomb report is out today. The findings show a clear trend: financial institutions are ending their involvement in the nuclear weapons industry.
