📊 Facts based on the data we have collected for 5 years: 📉 Only 10% of the girls aged 7-11 years old can name a woman in STEM when they start their coding journey with The Lavender Spaceship Project. 📉 48% of girls aged 12-16 years old say they don’t know any and 20% mention Marie Curie. 😊 Interestingly we've also had answers ranging from “a Roblox programmer named AGirljennifer” to “My mom” (amazing!). 🔎 As you can see from the above data points, there is a notable gap around awareness of women role models among young girls. Technology is highly inclusive, and EVERYONE has the ability to learn tech, especially with the amount of options there are in the industry. The resources available in this generation will make the biggest difference in shrinking the gender gap in technology. Girls Who Code is an outstanding resource along with learning platforms like Udemy & CodeAcademy. One thing about this article I disagree with is the age of limitation. Anyone, can learn anything, at anytime… as long as you’re interested. I have a phrase for people who dive into different career fields late into their professional lives, “born-again professionals”. In-fact, clinically speaking some of the best nurses, advanced practice nurses, and clinical support staff professionals I’ve recruited were prior technologists, teachers, or blue-collar workers. Technology, same thing. Industry shifters are optimistic and excited to try something new, so when they do it, they go 100%. Some parts of tech are scary (especially coding… for me), but that doesn’t mean it can’t be learned.

Representation is utterly crucial!!

This article raises thoughtful points about the persisting gender gap in STEM interest and education. I wonder if part of this gap starts even earlier than middle/high school - with the types of toys young girls tend to play with vs. boys. Dolls, play kitchens, and "girly" themes often dominate the toy aisle for girls. On the other hand, many parents buy robots, construction sets, coding games and science kits for their sons from a young age. Could the toys children play with continue to influence how girls see themselves and their place in technical fields? Do stereotypically feminine toys dissuade girls from believing they belong or would succeed in STEM? As the article mentions, exposure and role models are crucial for getting girls interested in emerging tech skills. I think equal access to building, coding and science-based toys for girls could also help shift their mindset about their own abilities. Just a thought on where some of these preferences and belief gaps may originate from. Would love to hear others' perspectives on this.
