Who’s always been a big fan of LEGO? This interlocking plastic cube block was invented in 1934 and remains a popular toy among children to this day. Throughout the years, they have consistently created exciting designs. However, one question remains: how do they continue to innovate after years? Lego Innovation Portal This is a platform made by LEGO since 2014 to collect all the innovative ideas that comes from their fans from all of the world. The chosen designs that goes to production. The designers will receive a 1% royalty for all sales worldwide, with their name credited on the instruction card. In my opinion, this is an excellent example of open innovation, in which LEGO and their fans work together to create innovative LEGO sets. I was recently reading an article which referenced the LEGO blocks.. The iconic #lego brick which can be used to build anything from a simple tower to complex robots or even a lifelike model of Disney world, is quite unique. I began to wonder why this simple block has for over 50 years remained the top-selling #play product around the world? What makes it so attractive? Two things that came to mind 1. It's just a block: The LEGO block in itself is so simple, but the fun of it is brought out by the user. When a child (or adult) combines, adds, removes and configures the blocks into something amazing, they experience a sense of accomplishment, ownership and just pure fun! It is this #agency that the player has, to decide how they use the little brick and what they do with it, the endless possibilities of creative expression it holds, which makes LEGOs such a fan favorite. 2. It's just a block: The LEGO block being as simple as it is, lends itself to the creation of extremely complex designs. Simplicity yields usability, hence #scale. With the simple building blocks, based on my need and interest I can build a castle, while you may build a bridge, and someone could build a house. LEGO didn't need to create a 100 toys, it just needed to create 10 blocks that could be configured a 100 different ways! This got me thinking, how does "It's just a block" apply to the way we are trying to solve for problems in education? Any approach that relies on #outcomes achieved through channeling the agency of its actors, will become the most adopted approach. So what if learning and education were to be achieved by tapping into the agency of our students? Would that potentially offer an effective and efficient approach to achieving student outcomes that we envision?
