Berlin’s Famous Club Scene Faces the End of the Party The closing of renowned clubs Watergate and Renate spells trouble for the city’s nightlife. The techno scene owes its existence to an historical anomaly. When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, there were heaps of abandoned spaces for clubbing to flourish and property was astonishingly cheap. Situated in an un-renovated, labyrinthine apartment block in the east of the city, Renate blamed its decision to close next year on rising rents and its landlord’s wish to repurpose the club’s enticing garden for new construction. Watergate’s explanation for ending its 22-year run was both more nuanced and concerning. Along with rising rent, wage and energy costs at its prime waterside location, its management pointed to shifts in the relevance of Berlin club culture for international DJs and young people: “The days when Berlin was flooded with club-loving visitors are over, at least for now, and the scene is fighting for survival.” Two-thirds of clubs rated their business prospects over the next couple of years as “bad” or “very bad,” according to a recent survey, and their revenue this year has declined by around 10% on average compared with 2023. Berlin’s nightclubs are faring better than those in the UK, where about three-quarters of venues have shut since 2005.

❯❮ 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐊𝐏𝐀𝐗 ❯❮ Arts presenters, festival organisers, and venue operators will be spoilt for choice at the Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo’s (HKPAX) Pitching Sessions, which feature a carefully curated set of presentations that run the gamut from VR and immersive technology to puppetry and orchestra. During the Pitching Sessions, the featured artists will be given 10 minutes to pitch their performances with supporting media, followed by a five-minute Q&A. The sessions are divided into two categories: international works, and productions from Hong Kong and mainland China, ensuring a diverse range of artistic voices. The works were narrowed down from a global open call, and the final lineup features seven international works and five local. While the sessions are open to all registered participants, what sets HKPAX apart is its targeted approach. For international pitches, expo organisers will specifically invite industry professionals from Hong Kong and mainland China, while the reverse is true for local pitches. This cross-pollination of ideas and opportunities creates a fertile ground for collaboration and cultural exchange, and a potential goldmine for those seeking fresh talent or innovative productions. For artists, it is a valuable opportunity to present their work to an audience of industry professionals, potential partners, and funders. More about Pitch Sessions’ selected projects: https://bit.ly/3zC8pUG HKPAX is on from 14 to 18 October 2024. Early bird discounts for passes and booths are available until 14 July. STARMUS VII... soon! Very excited to being part of STARMUS VII next week. The blend of science, music and art, unique to the festival, creates a level of inspiration that is truly breathtaking. Having attended the festival since its second version, it is great to see that this is the 2nd consecutive year that Starmus dedicates a session to Space Debris. I was hooked by Space Debris when I studied, and wrote my dissertation on it. It is fantastic to see efforts to communicate this topic to the general public. The benefits from space are many, yet only a few know or imagine the intricacies and level of complexity to solve challenges such as this man-made hazard! The health and evolution of the space environment, particularly key regimes such as LEO, where much of the innovation is happening, including for instance, the rapidly evolving IOSM market, pretty much will depend on the current development of cutting-edge SSA technology and services, for example Satellite Laser Raining (e.g. what Lumi Space is working on). Also, concepts such as circular space economy will need to become a second nature for space businesses, if we want to continue to rely on Space today, and for generations to come. We can restore the health in Space & Earth environments, so we must. Very much looking forward to it all, in particular to the Space Debris session, by Col. Chris Hadfield. The opportunity to listen for an entire week to amazing Scientists such as Dr. Jane Goodall, including 8 Nobel Prize winners, as well as fantastic musicians, is unprecedented. Every time, Starmus manages to conquer the hearts and minds of both, speakers and participants alike, and next week in Bratislava, it is expected to be a blast! 💥 🚀 ⭐ 🎸 https://lnkd.in/gjVbh4qi

INVISIBLE INTENTIONS: IN THE DEPARTURE LIES THE DREAM: There is a strong poetic in ‘departures’. Departures link with ‘orginations’ in the many senses of that word. ‘Points of departure’, for instance, suggest places (physical or not) from which people, things, trains of thought spring up, and start to move. Departures are the commencement of something. They are the moments in which a past (of necessity, desire, planning) meets a potential future (of objectives, destinations, goals). Something is about to begin…. This week saw two #LiquidBecomings departures. After months of anticipation, preparation and first imagination of this major project for Agora Now in 2024, and which is our third Agora Now 'nomadic' space, on August 27, we saw the departure of the MS-Fusion, from Baja (southern Hungary). On board: a crew excited to discover and interact with the stories and histories of the Danube. A few days later, on 31 August, the boat FLOW left the banks of the Vistula in Warsaw, to engage once more in a ritual – already well established – between this vessel and the river. Only this time, the journey forms part of a larger context, and is woven into a wider ecosystem. Read on below. Are you living in the city of your dreams? And how liveable is your city? I've been lucky enough to live in the city of my dreams for 13 years - Budapest. We originally moved to Budapest for a year and are still here. I like the city and I am all the more pleased that the city has made a big leap forward in the current ranking of the Global Liveability Index 2024 by Economist Intelligence: EIU. Budapest is now ranked 32nd with a score of 92.0. 7 places better than last year. This means that Budapest is now one place ahead of Düsseldorf. What do I like about the city? - Short distances with good infrastructure for both public transport and cars - very nice climate and varied nature with the river in the center and the hiking hills around Normáfa - extensive cultural offerings with the opera, many theaters, concerts and museums - good sense of security in the city, you never feel threatened when going out in the evening - official matters can be dealt with without long queues at public offices and many things can be done online Are you living in the city of your dreams? What do you like about it? How does your city rank?

I went to Sónar Festival Lisbon this weekend 🌟🎵 Ok nice story, but why is that LinkedIn's business? One thing that struck me this year was the diversity of the line up. Not in a way where the festival had tried to shoe-horn in diverse acts just to tick a box - but in a way that honoured each artist in their rightful place. From emerging talents to established artists, the festival celebrated a beautiful spectrum of genres, cultures, identities, and voices. 🎶✨ It was a real signal of the broader cultural shift that is starting to happen. It's evident that Gen Z, the driving force behind much of today's cultural landscape, is actively demanding diversity and inclusion in all aspects of their world🌍💡 👉 Last year, Glastonbury received a whole lot of criticism from Gen Z voices (and others) when the Pyramid headliners were all white and male. This year they have two female artists topping the bill for the first time in their 50 year history. 👉 In a recent Monster survey, 83% of Gen Z candidates said that a company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is important when choosing an employer. We're seeing in both music and business, diversity isn't just a buzzword—it's a fundamental ingredient for success. It's important for businesses to recognise the growing voice of the current and future workforce. Organisations that aren't willing to prioritise DEIB now, will eventually end up getting left behind. I'm taking inspiration from Sónar Festival to show that with just a bit of forward planning, we can start to create a movement towards a more diverse and inclusive world. 🚀 #DiversityMatters #DEIB #FutureInsights #SónarFestival
