Communicators need to listen. In my experience, when an underrepresented community member shares a story, it's usually a good one. I can't tell you how often dominant-narrative bias has prevented people from seeing the value in invisible narratives, the stories of lived experiences. I recently spoke on DEI communications: authentic storytelling, leveraging channels and building capacity. You can only do that by building listening skills. It's a practice that takes daily work and is part of the necessity of telling stories WITH the community instead of FOR them. When Luis Alonzo Garcia shared this photo with me, I knew I had to listen. I also knew that this needed to be shared broadly. A quick post later: it's a win for our community, platforms and strategic goals. I'm happy to see it perform well and even happier to see better representation and the sheer pride of the first-generation community being amplified. So, the next time someone shares an underrepresented story, listen. You may not end up with a published piece right away, but if you keep an open mind, you will start to see ways to bridge the narrative gap. There's a greater story waiting to be told. #DEICommunications #FirstGenerationCollegeStudent

This is Destiny. She is a teacher with a savviness about shaping the energy of a classroom of 5th graders that is second to none. Her laugh often fills the room and makes kids smile, even (especially?) when they’re feeling a little grumpy. Kids trust Destiny. They should. She works to earn their trust and then she shows up for them to keep re-earning it. She loves Hot Cheetos. Hot anything, really. Regardless if anyone else is in the room, Destiny passionately and openly embraces strategies to maximize engagement and learning. Her integrity- alignment of who she is in front of kids and behind the scenes- is astounding. No news stories will be written about this little window into her class. But there are extraordinary things happening in this clip and I deeply appreciate who Destiny is and how she shows up for her beautiful St. Louis students. Premier Charter School —— Appreciation: to “recognize the full worth of” For teacher appreciation week, I’d like to recognize a few specific teachers instead of the generic “teacher.” Why? Schools are the most powerful unit of change in public education. Almost nothing happens in schools without teachers. I coach leaders to help equip them to best serve their teachers. Because when a child gets exactly what they need- lives, families, and communities are transformed. There’s nothing like watching an extraordinary teacher in action- and helping them get even better. It’s been an honor to play a small role in amplifying Destiny’s impact this year.

Advice to new Pepperdine grads: Creatively and intentionally develop purpose, service, and leadership in your work. It's possible to be a self-centered worker in the nonprofit sector, just as much as it's possible to be an accountant or marketing exec living out selfless service. Don't let assumptions about your industry or seniority limit your intentional cultivation and application of core values and character. What would you add? 💙🧡 🌊

Reflecting on April... Began the month in NOLA for National School Boards Association and heard keynotes from Ruby Bridges and Tim Shriver, traveled to Lockport (IL) where the EOS partnership has supported a year-1 increase of 24% participation in AP, and heard Jason Green ('solutions must be future-forward') keynote the Multicultural Student Achievement Network's Institute, in Madison. Takeaways: ~Relying on past practices and outdated models only serves to perpetuate existing inequities and limit the potential of students.   ~To impact educational equity, we must embrace a 'future-forward' approach that breaks away from traditional and outdated teacher practices and assumptions about students’ academic potential.   ~By looking forward, we can envision a more inclusive and equitable educational system that meets the needs of all learners, regardless of their background or circumstances.   ~It is essential that we challenge the status quo, rethink our assumptions, and explore new ways of approaching education that are more responsive to the diverse needs of students.   ~By embracing a 'future-forward' mindset, we can create a more dynamic and inclusive educational landscape that empowers all learners to thrive and succeed in their post-secondary pursuits. It's not too late to engage with Equal Opportunity Schools and join our dynamic cohort of high schools for the 2024-25 school year.
