Meet the maker: Jaks Timber. Discover how reclaimed timber is transformed into design elements for 1hotel Melbourne at Seafarers. In a commitment to thoughtful urban renewal, we’ve collaborated with Jaks Timber to incorporate over 4,500m2 of reclaimed timber into 1 Hotel & Homes Melbourne. This includes more than 2km of timber beams from the heritage-listed Goods Shed No.5 and discarded railway sleepers from across Victoria. Each piece tells a story of sustainability and renewal. "A lot of the time you just don't see this timber anymore. The only way to see it is from a recycled resource. What we love working with and what what I fell in love with was, was the old growth Timbers, a lot of the Timbers that we work with and a a lucky to work with our old growth Australian hardwoods that were cut down in the country in the late 1800s, early 1900s. On this project are really lucky having the the heritage good shared on site there to be able to extract and and salvage some beautiful old growth Oregon timber purlins out of the roof. The the main size timber that we're working with is a 250 mil by 180 mil bridge and Wharf Timbers and so we're using the outside of those as the feature wall cladding. That was extremely lucky to have some beautiful Timbers come out of the Wharf restoration. The original pylons that were salvaged contain some some of the the really cool Teredo worm holes or or Marine borer holes. Once again, a really cool historic use of the timber from the original side going back into the project. A lot of the time you just don't see that timber anymore. The only way to see it is, is from a recycled resource. So a lot of these old heritage bridges, wharves, warehouses, they've got all these Timbers in those. So we, we worked really hard to to salvage those Timbers and, and ensure that they get to see another life because you see some of the the products that get produced from them. You just can't replicate that with new Timbers.

Plastic-Free July always inspires us to take a step back and ask ourselves, “How did we get here?” It’s undeniable that plastic waste is a massive global problem, and it’s quite astonishing that this material has made such a mark on our planet in such a short amount of time. This is largely due to the fact that one plastic bottle can take over 450 years to decompose. Plastic is a relatively young synthetic material—its mass production began only 150 years ago. Since then, so many different factors and events have shaped plastic’s journey. From World War II to the rise of Tupperware and plastic grocery bags, we’ve arrived at a time when plastic production has grown to 380 million tons per year. This should give us some hope that something that got out of hand so quickly can be reigned in quickly too. So, what can we do to be part of the solution to plastic pollution?
