Manage eye contact in virtual and in-person interviews

- We've all been taught to make eye contact when talking to someone, from a young age. It's advice that has generally served me well, but I'm going to share two less common tips for using eye contact to build trust and rapport that you may not have heard before. First, for the in-person interviews, I want you to practice taking breaks from looking someone in the eyes. In fact, ask someone you're very comfortable with, like a friend or a family member, to look you straight in the eyes while talking to you for a couple of minutes. Seriously, try this experiment today. You'll quickly realize how uncomfortable it is to have someone look you in the eyes without any breaks. It feels more like intense staring. Instead, in an interview, I want you to look the interviewer in the eyes while talking for a few seconds, then look away for a moment, then back to looking in their eyes.
