I think you'd be surprised to know how many people actually create their sites using GitHub and have been doing so for a long time for free. Now this is the official site for GitHub pages and it's got a little bit more information, but where you really want to go is all the way to the bottom, to these Guides section. And that's the documentation for GitHub pages where you can find some additional information on how to get started with Jekyll.
