- [Instructor] A Wireless Wide Area Network can transmit data over a long distance across a metropolitan area in a range from several kilometers to tenths of kilometers. Wireless wide area networking technologies provide a way to meet a long range and wide area data transmission requirements. Let's briefly introduce some typical wireless WANs first. The global system for mobile communications, GSM, is a standard for the second generation of mobile communications technology. The Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service, UMTS, is a standard for the third generation of mobile communications technology. The latest UMTS mobile network can provide a much higher speed than GSM. The Long-Term Evolution, LTE advanced, is a standard for the fourth generation of mobile communications technology.
