- [Narrator] Individuals commonly disclose private information which can help a hacker gather enough information to open a bank account. In the United States, individuals use a social security number to provide a unique identity that is used for federal tax purposes and identification to obtain credit. Theoretically, someone could gather enough information to make an estimation of a social security number. Algorithms have been written to estimate what someone's potential number would be. Why? Well, the social security numbering scheme has three parts. Now, this information is valid for any social security number before 2011. The first part of the social security number is the area number. Now, before 1972, the area number is the state where the individual requested the card. Now, this is important to know. For example, if they were born in Virginia, but they requested the card in Alaska, that would be where they…
