- As computing infrastructure matures, we're finding more and more wireless devices and fewer and fewer wired devices. Now, there's still lots and lots of wired devices, and yes, wired devices typically have way better bandwidth, but we're seeing wireless devices are making some strides as well. So as a pentester, you need to be aware of how to handle wireless networks and wireless devices. We've talked a little bit about them, but we want to go a little bit more in depth with respect to the tools that you'll likely be using. Keep in mind, however, when you use a wireless tool, you've got to make sure that you're operating in an environment that can utilize that tool. And what I mean by that is that our lab was based on a Windows host and we ran virtual machines inside that. That means that all of the networking subsystem is provided by the PCAP drivers or PCAP layer in Windows. The bottom line is that PCAP does not allow the software to go into monitor mode.
