- Anytime you start a new pentesting exercise, you may or may not have some knowledge, a priori knowledge, knowledge that that predates the starting point of the test. In other words, what do you know when you start? That's basically what it all boils down to. If you are a black box tester, that means that you don't have any prior knowledge, and so what you bring to the table is just a knowledge of pentesting in the environment in general, not necessarily the client's environment. If you're a white box tester, that's more like an insider and so you have access to lots and lots of resources. So what are some of the support resources that are available? You'll need to know these and know what they are and how they're used on the exam, and as a pentester, you want to look for these, because some of them you can find even as a black box tester.
