Environmental and scoping considerations
- One of the more important areas of consideration when you are developing a pen testing engagement is to consider the environment. Remember that the purpose of a penetration test is to test the validity of security controls for a target environment. So you're always going to be testing against an environment, so make sure you understand the environment itself and how it's put together. And there's multiple layers of how environments are actually architected. So let's take a look at some of the different aspects of environmental considerations. First off, look at the network itself. How is the network constructed? Are there physical segments or virtual segments or both? A physically segmented network is one in which the wires, the media actually segregate different parts of the network.
