Multicast operation

Now let's talk about multicast and some of the protocols that make multicast work. By the way, if you look at the ENCOR exam blueprint, we just need to be able to describe these protocols. There's no configuration according to the blueprint that we have to do in regards to multicast. Now you'll certainly need to know how to configure multicast when you get into your CCIE studies. But for now, we just need to understand the theory. So let's begin by talking about why do we need it, what is the benefit of multicast. And it's not that multicast is better than unicast or broadcast all of the time, but there is a time and a place for multicast. For example, in this scenario we've got a video server that wants to send out a video stream to participants that want to receive the stream. Now, let's pretend that this is a big corporate announcement, and the CEO is going to make a big announcement at 10 a.m. and everybody that wants to receive the stream, they say, hey, yeah, sign me up.
