- [Instructor] It's important for your SQL Server databases to be available whenever your employees or customers need to interact with them. And Azure VM has high availability technologies built into the service. But you can enhance those options even further, depending on your needs and budget. A single Azure VM will have an uptime of at least 99.9%. This translates to less than 8.77 hours of downtime per year. If you deploy your database across multiple virtual machines, you can raise the uptime to 99.99% and have the expectation of less than one hour of downtime per year. You can obtain this level of uptime by taking advantage of availability zones. When you deploy your first Azure VM, you'll need to choose a region to place it in. These are different areas around the globe that Microsoft operates data centers in, and the best practice is to locate your VM in a region that's closest to your employees or customers.
