Job Description

Provides orthotic and/or prosthetic services that complement the Orthotic and Prosthetic department, including evaluation and treatment of patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.

Experience

  • 3 years of experience in clinical orthotics and/or prosthetics
  • Internal promotion criteria: Meets all basic competencies and essential job duties for Orthotist /Prosthetist I and completes an approved levels program project

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pediatric clinical experience

Education

  • Master’s degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics or National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education accepted education for graduates prior to 2014

Certification Summary

  • Certified Orthotist and/or Prosthetist by American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics
  • Georgia orthotics/prosthetics license or proof of application
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of employment

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Ability to provide patient care as sole practitioner in satellite settings

Job Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive, senior-level orthotic and/or prosthetic age-appropriate patient care for newborns to young adults at assigned orthotics and prosthetics locations, including thorough assessment, formulation of a detailed treatment plan, achievement of accurate measurements/impression, device/component/material design, evaluation of fit and function of prescribed devices, and patient education.
  • Enhances department operations or clinical services through contributions beyond routine patient care, including participation with at least two projects, teams, or recurring tasks with manager’s approval, e.g., providing internal or external educational presentations, volunteering with a department-sponsored patient activity, research involvement, service on a Children's Healthcare of Atlanta council, and service within the orthotics and prosthetics profession.
  • Performs follow-up care, including assessment of fit and function and adjustment to device and/or treatment plan when necessary.
  • Communicates changes with physician/referral source and other members of patient’s treatment team.
  • Demonstrates thorough, accurate, and timely clinical, technical, and financial documentation, including ordering according to departmental policies.
  • Ensures financial documentation reflects understanding of insurance, billing, and coding practices.
  • Accepts unanticipated or rush assignments without compromising work already in progress.
  • Demonstrates effective time management by balancing direct and indirect patient care responsibilities, including appointment readiness.
  • Demonstrates clinical and financial responsibility during independent treatment at satellite, hospital, and/or clinic locations.
  • Develops relationships with physicians and therapists to optimize team management.
  • Serves as a resource by teaching and developing less experienced staff/students and being approachable and willing to assist staff.
  • Seeks and initiates learning opportunities through colleagues, physicians, interdisciplinary healthcare providers, manufacturers, and educational symposiums.
  • Obtains continuing education units necessary for certification achievement and maintenance.
  • Promotes a safe and professional environment for patient care through Joint Commission readiness and applying American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics facility accreditation standards.
