Behavioral Health Coach

NOTE: The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued new requirements for health care and congregant care facilities to decrease the risk of COVID-19 outbreaks. Based on the CDPH public health mandate, all candidates for positions at Edgewood Center must provide proof of vaccination. Behavioral Health Coach- this is a full-time, non-exempt, hybrid position. Mon-Fri., 10am-6pm.

Program Description

The Transition Age Youth Full-Service Partnership (TAY FSP) Program provides intensive community-based services to 50 young adults (ages 17-25) identified as having the highest mental health-related needs in San Mateo County. The program relies on a diverse staff and innovative program model to effectively meet the needs of this underserved and often marginalized population. Specific supports and services provided by this team include case management and care coordination, mental health treatment (assessment, therapy, medication management, and psychiatry), family support, crisis prevention and intervention, skill building (independent living, vocational, community safety, and emotional/behavioral), socialization and recreational activities, academic support and coordination, employment exploration, and housing support.

Position Description

The Behavioral Health Coach build’s collaborative relationships with our young adults in the TAY program, teaching and coaching them to learn and practice skills in the areas of symptom management, coping skills, medication management, time management, personal hygiene and safety, and socialization skills. The Behavioral Health Coach also provides innovative and engaging community-based interventions designed to build those independent living skills identified by the young adult. The Behavioral Health Coach works closely with our young adults and team members to develop an individualized plan for skill building and acquisition. The Behavioral Health Coach also completes assessment tools to identify areas of need, monitor growth or barriers, and celebrate the successes with our young adults. The Behavioral Health Coach will also work closely with both Drop In Centers and provide weekly workshops to TAY Clients and Community Clients.

Core Competencies

  • Ability to create curriculum, model, and teach a wide range of “life skills,” including social, independent living, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and community safety skills to individuals and small groups of 17-25-year old’s located at the either Drop In Centers
  • Ability to model and teach a wide range of skills around self-advocacy, employment, employability, educational attainment, community engagement, interpersonal relationships in school and work settings.
  • Ability to create, coordinate, and facilitate small group social activities and ILS workshops in partnership with both Drop In Centers for 17–25-year-olds.
  • Ability to teach both simple and complex skills to be applied in social and community settings and situations, taking into consideration varied learning styles, cognitive abilities, and cultural preferences.
  • Ability to develop, maintain, and strengthen partnerships with others inside and outside Edgewood who can provide information, assistance, and support in order to address identified skills-related goals.
  • Ability to Collaborate with emerging adult, natural supports, and team members inside and outside Edgewood to support treatment plan, plan of care, and behavior support goals.
  • Employs supportive interpersonal skills, including validation, listening, empathy, responding to feeling and content, prompting, summarizing, problem-solving, use of humor, and limit-setting.
  • Calm and professional response to crisis, including the use of mediation and de-escalation techniques.
  • Integrates team recommendations, ILS assessment tools, and observation/assessment of young adult independent living skills and goals to develop an individualized plan for skill building and acquisition.
  • Collaborates with emerging adult, natural supports, and team members to support treatment plan, plan of care, ILS goals and behavior support goals.
  • Contributes positively to creating a healing-centered, welcoming, anti-racist, LGBTQ affirming team and organization.
  • Demonstrates cultural competency, humility, and sensitivity treating youth, families, and colleagues with dignity and respect.


Essential Functions

  • Completes role-specific documentation and paperwork thoroughly and in a timely manner, meeting expected timeframe and productivity requirements.
  • Regards 17-25-year-old as persons with dignity and competence and engages them as full collaborators in service planning, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Works one on one with assigned young adults at Edgewood locations, in the home, and/or their community settings, depending on the needs and requests and the community support structures.
  • Collaborates with the Drop-In Peer Partners to deliver workshops and groups, for both TAY participants and Community participants.
  • Attends and actively participates in all mandatory meetings, including staff meetings, client team meetings, and treatment planning meeting.
  • Understands and values cultural and racial differences, their alternative perspectives on mental illness, help-seeking and alternative healing practices, as well as lifestyles, goals, family, and community life.
  • Consistently and effectively communicates with all team members, on an on-going basis, ensuring others have necessary and up-to-date information about client engagement, symptoms and behaviors, and progress towards goals.
  • Cultivates and maintains a structured independent work schedule from 10am-630pm that allows accessibility to clients, team members and supervisor while in community office and drop-in center locations.
  • Completes program and agency-specific documentation to meet San Mateo County, Medi-Cal, and the Joint Commission standards.
  • Facilitates a safe and welcoming environment in the workplace, community, and vehicles (agency or personal).
  • Attends and actively participates in 1:1 supervision; enlists support, requests, and integrates feedback.
  • Maintains positive work relationships in a respectful and collaborative manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Salary Information

The hourly rate range for this position is: $24.75-$29.73 per hour and dependent on experience and language differentials.

  • Please note- the language differential is contingent on passing a language proficiency test.
