Vision Zero DC
Vision Zero DC is an all-hands-on-deck approach to transportation safety. By the year 2024, the District will achieve zero transportation related fatalities and serious injuries through more effective use data, education, enforcement, and engineering.
As the prime contractor, we are leading a consultant team to engage the public and develop the content layout for the vision zero action plan. The public engagement includes bus shelter ads, bikeshare station ads, public awareness events…Vision Zero DC is an all-hands-on-deck approach to transportation safety. By the year 2024, the District will achieve zero transportation related fatalities and serious injuries through more effective use data, education, enforcement, and engineering.
As the prime contractor, we are leading a consultant team to engage the public and develop the content layout for the vision zero action plan. The public engagement includes bus shelter ads, bikeshare station ads, public awareness events, youth summit, bikeshare campaign, and social media. The feedback from the public awareness events is being used to develop the priorities of the strategies in the action plan. At the youth summit, the team worked directly with young people to redesign two of the fourteen most dangerous intersections.

North-South Corridor Planning Study
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) initiated a planning study to examine opportunities for high-capacity surface transportation improvements in the North-South corridor from the Takoma/Silver Spring area to the Buzzard Point/Southwest area. The study area is focused on a 9-mile corridor that includes most of the inner Southwest, crosses the National Mall, and in generally bound by 14th Street and 5th Street NW.

There are number assets in this area, including undervalued and underutilized water assets, emblematic historic structures and waterfront accessibility and open space. Unfortunately, Belize City has not been able to leverage these assets, and development challenges remain.

The Yarborough CPAT lays out a number of recommendations and urban design elements for the Yarborough (aka "Yabra") neighborhood in Belize City. The report identifies four planning priorities and focuses on many low-cost, community-led initiatives that can generate near-term tangible results for the community. Other recommendations center around the neighborhood's street network, utilizing vacant lots and enhancing public open spaces, and implementing coastal resiliency strategies.

🚇 #DYK, that 10 years ago today Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) completed Phase 1 of the Silver Line? As part of Phase 1, all four of the Tysons Metro stations opened. FHWA has clarified that State and Metropolitan Planning Funds can be used for Complete Streets planning activities without the need to match with non-Federal funds -- and that this waiver applies beyond the required spending on these activities under BIL. Hard to get that all in one sentence, but State and MPO planners may want to read on: https://lnkd.in/eCk6Hks3 FHWA encourages States and communities to adopt and implement Complete Streets policies that prioritize the safety of all users in transportation network planning, design, construction, and operations.

From our January report on transit accessibility: Congestion pricing "is expected to generate $15 billion...so essential to delivering the remaining station accessibility improvements to which the agency has committed. In addition to the critical resources it will provide to the MTA, CBDTP will reduce traffic blocking bus and paratransit customers, and improve air quality for New Yorkers." ✨Reducing demand for cars and trucks is a key strategy for business district recovery and resurgence in NYC.✨ The New New York action plan is the City and State's roadmap for business district recovery out of the pandemic. One of its three pillars for business district recovery is "Making It Easier for New Yorkers to Get to Work," and under that pillar sits one of the plan's forty initiatives: "Firmly Support Congestion Pricing." The goal of Congestion Pricing is to reduce driving in the Manhattan business districts while raising a dedicated revenue stream for needed transit repairs and upgrades. Why does this matter for business district recovery? Not only does it fund critical investments in public transportation, which is the lifeblood of New York City. Reducing demand for cars and trucks will also allow vehicles that do need to be on the road to travel more quickly and efficiently while opening up more of our street space for public space, pedestrians, and more sustainable modes of transportation. Grateful to B.J. Jones for stewarding NYC's business district recovery agenda so that we can make New York work for everyone.

34 years is an amazing legacy. The leadership the US has provided sine 1990 has been an invaluable influence to disability rights in countries around the world. But 34 later and what's changed in architectural, interior design, landscaping, urban planning, and industrial design, etc. education to ensure disability inclusion for disabled people and veterans is not only fully aligned with the ADA minimums but teaching beyond minimums, aiming for innovation and excellence? Where are the current and future changes to licensing and manditory post secondary education? Fully and usable disability inclusion won't be successful until building code legislation, education, policy, etc. are aligned to finally ensure accessibility is a fundamental principle to successful, sustainable design. Two pieces of legislation in #Connecticut could bolster public transportation if they make it through the General Assembly. Senate Bill 277 would restore funding to Shore Line East to increase rail service. Ridership plummeted during the pandemic, though it's been growing modestly since then. But as more people opt to work from home instead of commute, some question whether there's a need for more rail service. Jay Stange, coordinator with the Transport Hartford Academy, said state investments can help transit lines attract the riders they need. "Ridership on the Hartford Line, which has been supported by state investment, is up every year," said Stange. "We also are seeing huge increases on the Waterbury Line in Connecticut, where those service investments have been made. The bottom line is that if you don't have the service, you won't have the riders." The 2023 budget cut funding for Shore Line East to 44% of what was required for pre-pandemic service. The bill received wide support at a public hearing, but some residents don't agree that funding cuts cause low ridership. Studies show transit-oriented development reduces air pollution and uses large plots of land to accommodate growing populations. The bill faced opposition from communities concerned about the need for local control for developing these projects. The new version of the bill allows communities to "opt in" for these incentives instead.
