Proud when the work aims to drive change. 📣 The past few weeks, an integrated Edelman team spanning Creative, Earned Media, Client Leaders, Community Managers, Multicultural experts, Influencer Relations, Paid Media, and more, have been working on something important. Our client partners at Ajinomoto Co., Inc. have united a powerful coalition of Asian-American and other activists, chefs, food journalists, and nutritionists. Last week, they published an open letter calling on the NEJM Group - The New England Journal of Medicine - to revisit the racist term "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome" that they coined. ❗ ❗ Background: In 1968, the journal published a letter to the editor who wrote about effects from eating at some Chinese restaurants. The author of the letter didn't use the term, but the journal gave the letter the headline, "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome." From there, the media frenzy took off, creating a narrative that demonized MSG. 💡The Facts: MSG, a naturally occurring amino acid, is classified as safe by the FDA and is essential for bringing Umami to food. However, the 1968 headline by NEJM Group led to persistent racist misconceptions that the Asian community still confronts today. ⚡ Chef's and food writers such as Calvin Eng and Kat Lieu, DPT, CLT spoke about their experiences as Asian-American chefs who use MSG and the impact the racist rhetoric has on them as individuals, and the greater AAPI community at large. Kat said, "You have an America where Chinese food is seen as unhealthy or dirty or cheap, something like fast food, or worse." For Calvin, he envisions a future where MSG is valued for its role in enhancing flavor, free from outdated stigma, "It's about education and openness...We need to shift the conversation to celebrate the quality and authenticity of the food, moving beyond old misconceptions." After the WNBA Draft, I was asked to share my thoughts with the team at the TODAY Show (link below) on the incredible Caitlin Clark and the future outlook of the WNBA. This past season was magical and groundbreaking for both Women's College Hoops and Women's Sports in general as the Women's Tourney captured the imagination of millions of casual fans like myself and was reflected in the record viewership numbers with the Women's Final drawing a larger TV audience than the Men's Final. As I referenced in the article when asked about the pay discrepancy between WNBA and NBA stars, the WNBA has an incredible future in front of them with so many well known college stars coming into the league but it needs to continue to drive a significant increase in viewership and ticket sales which will grow the pie and future league media deals which in turn will generate much higher salaries for the next generation of WNBA stars. The WNBA record setting 2.45 M draft viewership numbers from Monday serve as a good indicator for the increased interest and potential as that is almost 500% higher than the draft viewership (512,000) from last season which is exactly the insight I shared with TODAY as the TV numbers needs to grow 4 or 5 X not just 10 - 15% to really drive a meaningful increase in revenue and player salaries. One thing that is 100% certain is that I personally can't wait to tune in to watch the WNBA this season. It’s cool to be on the inaugural Variety 10. They’re recognizing 10 CMOs that they feel are “the most important and consequential leaders of our time.” And I love this list of marketers. I know and admire their work, and I appreciate the thinking behind why Variety chose these brand leaders. All of them are truly innovative and see the world differently. They solve problems in fresh, unexpected, or unconventional ways. They are thoughtful in how their brand transcends the product or service, and find inspiring ways to give back and be a force for good. The list is a mix of highly established brands that are reinventing themselves and finding ways to be relevant and relatable to young and mature audiences, and then there are pioneers and digital natives that are exploring and bringing us new experiences and choices — inspiring us all to live differently, and live better. And many like the NFL are focussed on not just growing their audience, but driving a brand resurgence by making themselves more accessible, relatable and inclusive — uniting people and building strong ties with communities. And most of all, they’re leaders who are not afraid to take risks, showing the power of brave marketing…and demonstrating how building a brand builds businesses. So, a huge congrats to the other 9. There are three key traits, IMO, that have made New Balance and Chris Davis successful in growing the brand and all 3 are displayed in this campaign. 1. They grew their categories slowly and strategically. 5 Years ago you never would have seen all of these different sports represented, let alone at the same time. The planned their entrance into a category, tested and nailed the product, signed the talent and promoted it effectively. 2. They put stars of all types on display with equal footing. Regardless of gender, race or sport - they have been promoting their talent along side the brand in a really balanced way. This helps bring consumers into the brand from a single connection point and become exposed and aware of the categories the brand plays in. Also, they don't have to shout about their equality efforts through PR spin, they just put them on display by living it. 3. They refresh their brand campaign rather than reinventing it. Consumers can take years to fully acknowledge what a brand is standing for or even just saying about itself. Unfortunately, by the time a brand positioning is starting to land with a consumer base, brands often feel the corporate psychological pressure to reinvent (what's our annual strategy this year? What's our new message? etc). Instead, NB has refreshed "We got now" and are going to continue allowing consumers time to connect with that brand ethos. Marketing is like life. Changing is often easier, than enduring. A lot of brands like changing what they say because it's easier than focusing on doing what you already do better. You need to establish who you are, live it and then reveal to the world how you're living it. Side-note - I love the talent roster they're building. I know the group isn't finished yet, but I love where they're headed.

By applying AI and generative tools, the NFL can now deliver personalized content tailored to global audiences. For instance, ads featuring Travis Kelce for Germany and Patrick Mahomes for the UK can be swapped in real time, enhancing engagement. Additionally, AI-powered translation tools are being tested to reach fans in diverse markets, from Latin America to China. Beyond marketing, the NFL is considering vendors like Amazon and Microsoft to scale these solutions across platforms, including social media and in-game experiences.

The brand instills customer loyalty and creates an open door for new customers to give them a try and become hooked. The company also amplifies the brand's reach from tons of earned media coverage because who doesn't want to know about an opportunity to grab free ice cream. In #healthcare, it's much harder to replicate this tactic, but healthcare organizations can and do offer free community clinics where they offer services such as blood pressure and eye check ups as well as other types of health screenings that demonstrate the organization's commitment to engaging with the community in providing high quality care. https://lnkd.in/ezE8bHvf?
