"A small project in Loveland, an elderly gentleman was very concerned about cracks in his foundation. I designed the fix and explained it to him." 🎤Do you remember your first day of college? What was it like? "Hectic, nervous, and fearful of getting lost. The amount of people was alarming, but I made it." 🎤What is one thing you enjoy doing outside of work? "Watching hockey, and spending time with my family." 🎤What is the greatest potential for architecture and/or engineering to shape a neighborhood community? "To provide an environment that is inviting, memorable and comfortable."

"In July 2023, at a construction site in Kansas City, Missouri, 29 men and three women started their workday in an unusual way: by swallowing a pill-sized data-collection device. The devices would monitor their body temperature as they labored in heat that averaged around 88 degrees, with 50 to 70% humidity. The results were alarming. Over three days of data collection, 43% of workers’ body temperature reached 100.4 degrees—the level of a low-grade fever, the University of New Mexico–led study found. And 4% of workers exceeded 101.3 degrees." Our session at The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter's conference this Monday, From Intentions to Impact, drew over 100 brave souls (who didn’t succumb to the post-lunch nap) and kept them entertained, engaged, and informed. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲? Before diving into your next project, consider energy efficiency first, electrify those buildings, and don't forget to snag those federal, state, and utility incentives while you're at it! 💡 We also dug into life cycle costs, including operational carbon (because why stop at just today when we can think about tomorrow’s planet too?). It’s all about making the best impact on your community, budget, and our lovely Earth. 🌍 Plus, we tackled the big questions: Is net-zero the right goal for every project? Can geothermal power heat both pools and animal shelters? (Spoiler: Yes, and yes—it's not just for polar bears 🐻‍❄️). State and Federal construction building projects, please stop wasting my tax dollars by not requiring BIM Coordination or providing any sort of BIM Coordination Specifications on mid to large projects. Yes, this project needs BIM. At over 130k SF, more content then the images show, and congestion like this throughout, there is great risk of delays and claims due to the number of changes that will be required. But without the specifications and clear requirements, not everyone will even include BIM coordination. For those contractors who want so utilize BIM, with no BIM Spec provided, most will receive lack luster results in the end due to the chasing to the bottom, low-cost approach. And unfortunately with these kinds projects, BIM receives a bad representation...I wonder why. I have seen countless project like this and I hear too many of them not going well for the contractors and owners involved. I feel for these contractors and all those from the management to the field. It doesn't have to be this way! If you have the ability to stop this, there are solutions. One option is we provide a BIM Commissioning service to owners, owner representatives, and design build or GC/CM contractors. With this service we bring clear BIM Specifications and accountability across the entire project life cycle so everyone can win in the end with BIM. #BIMBetter #BuildBetter #BIMCoordination

What I generally hear from contractors, homeowners, and the general public is that engineers are arrogant and closed off. "They think they know everything!" Now this isn't true for all engineers. When engineers (and all professionals for that matter) deal with people the following should be remembered: People don't care about how much you know until they know how much you care. Add value to your customers, not just their projects.
