Research Thesis on “Peer Tutoring”

Using socio-cultural learning theory, this study focuses on how peer tutoring can be used effectively class wide to reduce students’ dependency upon the teacher, while increasing students’ academic achievement and confidence in mathematics for students to view themselves and their peers as resources. Students engage in peer tutoring during note taking, warm-up activities, quiz/test review sessions, and class presentations through the use of Classwide Peer Tutoring and Term Tag. Through this, students practice and gain the confidence to verbalize their thoughts and justify their thinking process, which is turns enable them to assist their peers and view themselves as resources. Thus, these findings suggest that peer tutoring is an effective strategy that can be used to build student’s academic success and independence, which is an essential skill needed beyond the math classroom.
