Empowering Latino Health with Dr. Joseph Betancourt: Tackling Inequities and Building Resilience 🌿  .  Dr. Joe Betancourt highlighted the critical factors that shaped Latino health outcomes. Despite facing higher poverty rates, housing challenges, and limited access to healthcare, Latinos demonstrated remarkable resilience, exemplified by the Latino Epidemiologic Paradox—lower mortality rates from heart disease and cancer, and longer life expectancy compared to non-Latino populations.  .  The paradox, driven by strong family networks and cultural protective factors, was now at risk as acculturation eroded these advantages. Dr. Betancourt emphasized the importance of tackling social determinants, improving access to meaningful care, and advocating for policies that address health disparities.  .  Together, we had to champion healthcare access for all, ensuring that health insurance, quality care, and culturally appropriate services were available to Latino communities. In their new Forefront article, Mia Shenkman and Tonantzin Juarez from Wesleyan University and Weitzman Institute outline steps Health Centers can adopt to comprehensively integrate harm reduction into their practices and to more effectively address the overdose crisis in the communities they serve. "The Biden-Harris Administration incorporated harm reduction into its Overdose Prevention Strategy for the first time in 2022—allocating $30 million in federal grant dollars to SSPs, naloxone (Narcan) distribution, fentanyl test strips, and harm reduction research. This was a large step forward for the harm reduction movement which, despite supporting strategies long-proven to decrease overdose deaths, has traditionally been overlooked, underutilized, and considered taboo by the traditional health care system. This is in part because harm reduction frameworks—which view people who use drugs (PWUD) as battling a chronic condition and deserving of unequivocal access to compassionate, non-judgmental care—represent a radical departure from traditional medical models."
