Advancement Leaders Must Have a Vision, Too. There are common threads to what advancement leaders say they need in a president if they are to be optimally effective. The president needs, they say: A compelling vision Concrete examples of how that vision could be advanced through private investment To listen to where donors are coming from and suggest where interests could converge To stay on task, like a candidate running for office To patiently and methodically build strategic partnerships, not just chase the occasional gift To create a culture of accountability and transparency to ensure private support is applied to the greatest strategic effect To work toward building a stronger community of shared purpose Okay, fair enough, but then listen to some of the most common frustrations expressed by those same advancement leaders, including the fact that much of the board, the executive team and many internal stakeholders have naive if not unrealistic expectations about fundraising. That means advancement leaders need to have a plan to build internal support with the same elements presidents must have if they are to build external support. Those elements are contrasted below. Yes, I know, you have too little time as it is but too much of your time is spent explaining how this business works in a reactive, defensive mode. Accept that these barriers and limitations will be found in just about every organization and develop a plan to build greater internal awareness, understanding and participation. Help internal stakeholders see that building partnerships will get the organization to a better place than chasing gifts. Show how all will benefit over time by with a deeper understanding of philanthropy and by working more collaboratively. Take advantage of all the information you have on LinkedIn. Forward posts from fellow practitioners that speak to the issues that you think are too little understood within, especially those that cite research that debunk myths and point to more adaptive practices. You, too, must understand that you are like a candidate running for office. You must have a message and stay on it. You must be visible in the right places and be viewed as a good listener trying to represent the will of the people. The president must tell the story of the organization's unique strengths and contributions, then cast a vision of how it can better serve society using the right blend of wow and how. You must tell the story of how the greatest support won by the organization has been achieved by attending to relationships over time and how by expanding and deepening those relationships your organization can build a more sustainable philanthropic culture. If you hire a consultant, hire one that will assist you in this task, not one who will nurse delusions, offer the same old products and services, and ply simplistic formulas thereby ensuring your team will be held to increasingly unrealistic expectations.

The association community, through ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership, has urged both presidential campaigns to recognize and prioritize the contributions of trade and professional associations in their policy agendas. From the letter, associations account for over 1 million jobs, generating more than $71 billion in wages, and hold more than 272,000 events every year that attract nearly 52 million participants and generate $42 billion in spending. New case alert: The CHIPS and Science Act became law two years ago today. "The CHIPS Program Office" takes place between then and now. It is a case about leaders tackling the dilemmas of public entrepreneurship. Building a new, public effort from scratch. More broadly it is a case about any organization balancing between Type I and Type II error. The case closes with US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo noting: "Years from now, when we judge the success of the program we will be judged on at least two key imperatives… First, whether this program enabled us to build a reliable and resilient semiconductor industry that protects America’s technological leadership for the coming decades… Second, we will be judged on whether we were good stewards of taxpayer dollars. We are making a public investment in private industry without recent precedent, and taxpayers deserve transparency and accountability.”[i] She had to decide whether the Notice of Funding Opportunity as conceived set the stage to achieve those dual goals. As we approach the possible reopening of Shuman Center, it’s clear that the path forward must prioritize the holistic development of our youth beyond mere incarceration. As an expert in program development through strategic collaboration, I advocate for integrating comprehensive supportive services for both juveniles and their families. The key to breaking the cycle of recidivism lies in addressing the root causes of youth behavior, many of which are deeply intertwined with family dynamics and trauma. I propose assigning life navigators—dedicated case managers—to each youth. These navigators will provide essential services, including partner referrals, program participation tracking, mentorship, and follow-ups for at least 6 to 12 months and beyond as needed. This structured support system ensures continuous engagement and addresses both immediate and long-term needs. Despite differing visions for the facility, it’s crucial to recognize that short-term detention does not equate to neglecting the broader needs of these young individuals. While Adelphoi focuses on immediate safety and court processing, integrating supportive services through third-party providers ensures that we don’t miss the opportunity to offer rehabilitation and positive development during this critical period. County Executive Sara Innamorato’s vision of holistic services, including mental health and educational opportunities, aligns perfectly with this approach. With the integration of wraparound services and experts, we can enhance service delivery and maintain rigorous oversight of programmatic activity and outcome metrics while addressing concerns about privatization, transparency, and accountability. Imagine the impact of a solution-based approach that transforms the Highland Detention Center from a place of mere confinement into a catalyst for positive change.
