A lot of nuances go into lifelong #skills. Not just in #UX design but also in developing good #software and just about anything that requires #construction and #usability. With #software ✅ one must bake into it #commercial impact to the type of business you're in. #finops apply not just for cloud, but underlying #components of software construction. If you're #licensing or #subscribing then the cost #drivers need to be simulated against the business size ❌ As leaders, several statement needs to be avoided as it can be perceived as a lack of #commercial awareness. - a bigger boss says so, hence we do it - it's just the cost of doing business - our competitors have it so must we Business lines vary by the following criteria and therefore #technology needs to be #rightsized for success. ✅ Revenue per unit of customer and the number of customers addressed. Some countries like #bangladesh, #india and #indonesia have a massive addressable population but ticket size can be smaller. This means the architecture needs to scale at low cost, i.e. - the graph of cost of solution per customer cannot be exponential - the starting cost needs to be lower or the tail of tech wags the business dog. ✅ Speed of and urgency of transactions Coming from #oilandgas, #retailbanking versus #insurance we see the former business lines moving at a much faster pace (hundreds of thousands of transactions per day). Not only that, but more urgent e.g. when a monetary transfer is made, it needs to be confirmed ASAP. #lifeinsurance in particular, not so much. #Underwriting complex #medical products that are high value requires time to collect medical data from the customer. Would there be tens of thousands of such cases a day? Highly unlikely as we have industry wide data that shows #distribution #productivity is only 30% at best. ✅ Level of availability #stock #investments systems must NOT go down or they'll be massive opportunity cost lost. Versus say a system that tracks progress of complex #claims. Can it be down for half a day even, potentially yes. In summary, #experience and #leadership in #commercial aspect of #technology will differentiate the companies that are competing with one another. Nuances matters.
