I love to see organizations embracing "secure by design." This fresh whitepaper by Eric Johnson, Bertram Dorn, and Paul Vixie is an excellent example. This excerpt is spot-on: "Another way to think of SbD is to consider the topology of a space, such as a house. An SbD setup should have only closed, finite rooms in the configuration space (house) that do not allow access to an infinite space (outside of the house) except through well-defined and carefully controlled ingress and egress points. This absence of configuration space options facilitates added security. If you don’t make design principles accessible to builders, then they’re creating IT workloads in a secure environment." They correctly call out that SbD simplifies compliance. The only part I disagree with is this: "Some may wonder: Is speed of the essence for the product, or should you invest more in its security? The answer provided by experience is increasingly clear. Organizations that prioritize speed of execution over security are paying a heavy price." I believe this is a false tradeoff. You can make developers faster by giving them building blocks to get their job done quickly and those building blocks have SbD embedded, so you get security as a side effect. https://lnkd.in/gDACTMGm

Can you make an outdated car more modern? I’ve started reading Gregor Hohpe ‘s Platform Strategy book (https://lnkd.in/gZJ2YRy7) and got to the part of API platforms… needless to say this area is near and dear to my heart and I have a lot to say 😉 Quick thought: I think about these “API platforms” referred to in the book (p80)... That the full-stack vendor API platform products are not adequate for the very internal developer platforms that orgs wish to build to improve developer productivity. In fact the vendors used to illustrate the API platforms are exactly outdated. Now you might go through the product brochure of these vendors and see a lot of shiny things in there, and buzzwords used to dilute the value of the real thing, but these bolt on, cloud/modernization washing is not akin to the real thing. And to use a car example for Gregor… taking an 1985 Buick Century and washing, it, shining it, and adding a cassette adapter to play music from our phones does not make it a modern car. I've appreciated all the folks who have suggested I look at System Initiative this week. The great thing is, I've been tracking them for a bit now. I've even written about them and the other companies who are changing how we work, for the better. All the Next Wave companies are focused on context, helping teams navigate the current level of complexity, and preparing teams for what comes next. Huge believer in this problem and the companies that are solving it. Including my own. We're like dependabot for your entire technical stack. I don't know if you are aware but unplanned work is a big pain point for our Ops friends and it's only getting worse. So why not start with the small stuff no one has time to get to, Automate that away and give teams peace of mind while reducing toil. Don't worry Security, there will be checks and balances including an audit trail. It'll make staying in compliance a snap! All that to be said, SI's GA announcement is cool, and the approach of moving from a factory to a team. A pipeline to something more organic to manage infrastructure is timely. The team has worked hard and it shows in their GA offering! While you are checking out SI, I'd highly recommend checking out some of the other companies in the Next Wave of DevOps, if you haven't already. The number of companies is growing and the founding teams are passionate about this space and the problems. We are better together and all of the companies are amazing!
