One of the reasons we need re-assess how gig driving software companies operate in Massachusetts is because they are not paying their fair share, neglecting legally-required worker protections, and creating an environment in which drivers are getting paid (net) less than minimum wage. This is unacceptable.

CCS Fundraising released the 13th edition of the 2024 Philanthropic Landscape Report, providing timely insights into the philanthropic sector. Key highlights from the report include: * The top global philanthropy causes in 2023 included disaster relief, health, and human rights. * Though individual giving, the largest share of total giving, grew by 1.6%, total donors dropped 3.4%. * Foundation giving surpassed $100 billion for the second year in a row. * There are now an estimated 2 million Donor-advised Funds (DAFs) in the US. *Corporate philanthropy as a giving source increased to $36.3 billion but remained the smallest share of total giving. *Building four pillars of AI readiness – People & Culture, Centralized Data, Global Data Governance, and Ethics & Security – can enhance fundraising success. #fundraising #fundraisingstrategies #fundraisingtips #fundraisingtrends #fundraisingdata #givingtrends https://lnkd.in/geBNpwnY

So good that we are talking about this more here in Massachusetts, de-stigmatizing "mental health," and getting support to those who need it! "In the landscape of American agriculture, focusing on farmer’s #mentalhealth is somewhat new. In 2019, the U.S. Department of Agriculture launched the Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network, which provides grants to states to establish #networks connecting agriculture workers to stress assistance programs. "Using those funds, the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources in 2023 launched MassGrown Wellness, a program to connect agricultural workers with mental health resources. This May, a statewide peer support group has been added to the program, for which Colman is a volunteer. “'Agriculture is a very stressful way of work and life, it has very high suicide rates,' said Greg Porell, project coordinator for the state Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network. 'The U.S. Department of Agriculture has recognized this for a while, and finally started to fund (mental health) programs specifically for farmers.' "In a statewide survey of over 200 agricultural community members conducted in 2022, MDAR found that of the 80% of respondents who reported being aware of mental health and wellness resources, 63% neglected to use them. “'There’s a pretty significant stigma associated with farmer’s mental health and not being strong enough to solve their own problems, which is a major obstacle in the ag community,' said Porell. 'Farmers think that they should be able to handle things themselves.' "While post-pandemic rates of mental illness have skyrocketed nationally and as pressures on farms — both economic and weather-related — have risen, the plight of #farmers is dire. Smart Growth America’s 2024 Dangerous by Design Report is now out. Unsurprisingly, yet still increasingly saddening and maddening, those that walk and roll through communities all across America (and for many, not by choice), are doing so by placing their lives on the line. The bad news is that 7,522 people were struck and killed while walking in 2022, with Black, Native American, low-income folks, and the elderly at exponentially higher levels. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way. It’s time for those in power to prioritize the safety and well-being of the nearly 30% of Americans that do not or cannot rely on personal vehicles to get around. I appreciate the creativity of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving as the sector continues to rethink capacity building. Some years ago, while planning a conference for the Alliance for Nonprofit Management, I had the opportunity to connect with the Hartford Foundation and I found their commitment to capacity building impressive. As I've written about several times in the past five years or so, including a #trends2023 article I wrote with Trish Abalo, capacity building is a process...a long one at that! Too often we confuse capacity building with technical assistance. They are not the same thing! Technical assistance is focused on solving a problem or learning a new skill. Yes, it's necessary for funders to support technical assistance (TA) needs of their grantee partners, AND it's important to go beyond TA. Technical assistance is part of capacity building, the two must go hand-in-hand. This is what Hartford's Social Enterprise Accelerator program does. The foundation invested in organizations learning new skills for building fee-based revenue (TA), and the 30-month program (yes, two and a half years!) guides organization through business planning, implementation, and first year growth. The resources are available for success! As we consider the example of Hartford, and others, there are some key lessons for us to rethink capacity building... 💡 Long-term investments are crucial 💡 Centering racial equity is a must 💡 Unrestricted, multi-year grants ARE capacity building 💡 Asset-based approaches are more effective 💡 Culture matters (a LOT!) 💡 Systems thinking is critical (and yes, it's connected to racial equity!) 💡 Centering care and rest builds capacity for the long-term 💡 Unrestricted, multi-year grants are capacity building (in case you didn't hear it in the back!)
