Sometimes #energytransition progress is talked about with so little fanfare you can almost miss it...unless you read things like the recently published SPP 2023 State of the Market Report. Congratulations to Southwest Power Pool for continuing to reliably manage an increasingly intermittent generation mix, including the continued expansion of #demandresponse resources. "For the second straight year, wind generation produced the highest percentage of total generation, at 37 percent in 2023." "Of the 1,806 MW net increase in nameplate generation capacity from 2022, 1,693 MW were from wind resources, 431 MW were from dispatchable demand response, and 239 were from solar resources." https://lnkd.in/ghVSqNxF #DR #DERs #VPPs

For anyone who will be at IEEE Power & Energy Society T&D Conference feel free to stop by our panel session on #EVs and #gridreliability. Will be an interesting cross-sector discussion including technology provider, independent system operator, and utility perspectives among others. E-mobility is driving the blending of Transmission and Distribution system planning, design, and operations. Particularly with the growing prevalence of distributed energy resources, IoT and grid-edge technologies, and virtual power plants (#VPPs).

Interesting read on near term electricity reliability planning - growth of intermittent capacity; asset shifts; growing cyber-threats; sector-coupling gas & grid; inter-regional capacity markets and demand growth. A lot to digest. In my view, district energy systems fit perfectly in the mix to support cities, communities and campuses as the energy transition unfolds. https://lnkd.in/eFQr9uGs

Congratulations to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) team on today’s final transmission permitting rule! Section 216h of the Federal Power Act sat dormant for nearly a decade until the DOE team under Secretary Granholm recognized how enormously important permitting for major transmission lines is and how DOE could play a leading role in improving the permitting process. Today’s final rule on DOE’s Coordinated Interagency Transmission Authorizations and Permits Program aligns with many of the findings of Clean Air Task Force and Niskanen Center's recent report, Evidence-Based Recommendations for Overcoming Barriers to Federal Transmission Permitting. Some of those recommendations include: * continued executive branch leadership * better interagency cooperation * robust pre-filing processes * transparent timelines * cultivating transmission expertise among key permitting officials Congrats DOE, and thanks again Ted, Kerensa, Johan, Megan, Nicole, and Kenneth for the excellent work that helped shape DOE’s rulemaking. https://lnkd.in/eJu3JuWP

Grid analysts challenge Bonneville Power’s pace in adopting advanced conductors--my latest for PV Magazine USA. As the White House encourages utilities to use advanced conductors to help interconnect new renewable generation, the federally-owned utility Bonneville Power is moving slowly to use the high-capacity conductors, analysts said.
