Yet another #streaming platform name that is not pronounced the way it reads! Now we have a working name, what will be next thing to come out of this? Will be interesting to see how much more we learn about the platform building - and if it's really as 'built from scratch' as the comments suggest. 2 other questions also stand out: 1) Given the impending loss of WBD's NBA rights - how impactful will that be to this relationship given how important it was to their sports mix 2) Can they really meet the deadlines proposed given how slow this appears to be getting off the ground? https://lnkd.in/ezrgc4KM

Live sports is becoming the anchor for profitable streaming in an increasingly competitive environment. Recently, Jon Christian, EVP, Qvest.US spoke with Alexandra Canal at Yahoo Finance about why sports is the next frontier for the media industry’s ‘war on eyeballs’ and what is driving recent sports media deals. "The sports leagues are just taking advantage and trying to get as much as they can. They do not want to do just an exclusive deal with one partner. They want to have the diversification." "What we have now is still that old model plus this new model, so the fragmentation looks much more severe," Christian said, describing the current media landscape as a "war of eyeballs." Additionally, "there is a lot more revenue to be had in terms of rights because you can separate rights between traditional linear broadcast versus digital and get even more money in that way." I really enjoyed this interview Mike Hume had with Ben Fawkes about #sportsbetting and the media. They talk about casual bettors, savvy bettors, and sharp bettors. Ben hits the nail on the head with sharp bettors: the kinds of things media is doing are generally not going to be of sufficient value to sharps. They've got their systems and aren't going to find enough value in even a more evolved media offering. The most interesting discussion to me was the talk of the casual bettor. Ben noted that casual bettors are the biggest audience segment but the media market is pretty saturated with existing competition. That is accurate in terms of what people are currently doing. However, that's going to need to change for anybody that is not one of the big dogs. Much of what is currently being done was built for what Google was and not what it is becoming. Search traffic has taken a hit everywhere, and I'm interested in the future of how media outlets serve the casual bettor. I've got some ideas I'm hoping to implement here at Vox Media/SB Nation, as I think there is a big opportunity for someone to get really creative and not do the same old thing that virtually all betting/media partnerships are currently doing. Many sports rights owners are looking to setup their own OTT platform. Here are some important things to take into account while going OTT. 1️⃣ Don't play defensive Setting up a platform for defensive purpose, in case something goes wrong will only get you so far. At some point, you need to go on the offensive but of course that means taking some risks like not giving exclusive rights to your broadcasters so you can also put it on the platform. If you do not believe in the potential of your own platform, It will fail.... 2️⃣ Fans first While many are talking about launching an OTT platform, I'd rather see a fan engagement platform that is mostly video centric. It's all about creating a deeper link with the fans through content. The platform is the vehicle, not the end game. 3️⃣ Distribution Too many think that going OTT means being able to control the distribution. Sorry to be the one to tell you that's never the case. You build an app, you still have to go through stores, connected TVs and in most cases telcos and other players in the market to support your distribution. Proper distribution strategy is a must otherwise, you can have the best app in the world, nobody will watch... 4️⃣ Content If you do not plan to produce content that moves the needle, you can stay home and enjoy your sports being handled by others. I'm amazed to see offering that no one is asking for being put on the market with hopes that it may somehow get subscriptions. You need to surpass what is currently available, not just match it. 5️⃣ It's not just about subscriptions There are many potential revenue streams, getting subscriptions is the safest most reliable one, but it's not the only one. Advertising, sponsorship, branded content, fan tokens. In my opinion, you should not choose one but instead go for all of those at the same time. 6️⃣ It's ok not to go OTT In the end, going for your own platform might not be the proper strategy. If you do not have a plan for premium content and no clue how to monetize, you can stick with social media and partners. That's perfectly ok, you might miss on something big but you might also save a few bucks.
