According to the Wall Street Journal report, Steward paid a $719 million reward to its private equity owner, Cerberus Capital, despite facing a net loss of $300 million in the same year. Additionally, $71 million was distributed to Steward's management team, including CEO Ralph de la Torre, MD, totaling $770 million in dividends in 2016. Last week Simran Suri and I shared our thoughts on one of the biggest consumer behavior tidal changes we’re closely monitoring - GLP-1s. The narrative around GLP-1s is expansive, ranging from speculation around whether certain celebrities are using the drugs to clinical studies detailing their positive impact on conditions like Alzheimer's and alcoholism. For all this conversation, we have yet to see widespread discourse around weaning off of GLP-1s. This experience can be harrowing for consumers physically and emotionally as weight regain can happen rapidly without proper management. At Maveron, we’re actively looking to meet with teams that are helping consumers safely and effectively manage their side effects and deprescribe from GLP-1s. We’re particularly interested in platforms that are taking a more personalized approach to care coordination by looking outside of just weight-loss-driven fitness and nutrition, and into broader lifestyle and wellness. We believe these platforms have the potential to demonstrate strong unit economics, as consumers will need to adhere to care and lifestyle modifications post-deprescription in order to maintain their weight loss.
