The 2024 Innovations in Psychotherapy Conference in Anaheim, CA is less than a month away. I'll be your host and emcee for all 4 days. (Brace yourself!) I'm probably most excited to honor Ruth Lanius with the Innovations Award in Psychotherapy. There's only been one other recipient, and that's Bessel van der Kolk. If you don't know her, you should. She's one of the foremost neuroimaging experts in the field of PTSD whose research spear-headed the findings that there is, in fact, a dissociative sub-type of what we call PTSD (and that we need to tailor our treatments based on it). When I asked her what she feels her most important contributions have been to the field, here's what she said: First - every imaging study she conducts comes out of a real patient's experience. And she's adamant that every psychotherapy study, even one's based in neuroimaging, should be connected to real lived experiences. Second - she takes the most pride in the fact that she is helping, for the first time, make "the invisible wounds of trauma visible." If you're a therapist, you know how crucial it is that our patients feel their experience of suffering is valid and validated. She does this through her neuroimaging work that is showing more and more the neurological fingerprints of trauma. It's going to be an awesome conference -- not just fun, but meaningful. Not just practical, but inspiring. These events are not easy to plan, but the reason we do it is because getting therapists together matters. And we try to organize them in a way that makes them accessible to as many therapists as possible. The conversations and trainings that happen here will continue to reverberate through the field and the thousands of attendees practices for years to come. I hope you'll be part of it! Being a teenager is hard enough. Being a teenager and struggling with OCD is even harder. Know YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Join our support group and hear from other teens about their OCD journey and what they have learned along the way. The in-person support group is led by Melanie Loya, M.S. We understand that joining a group can be hard. You will never be forced to participate, some people start out just by listening. Group members will learn how to relate to OCD in new ways so they can be more present and get back to doing what matters most in life. The group allows participants to openly share struggles and successes and gain understanding from other teens that can relate to the unique experience of navigating OCD. This is a support group and is not meant to function in place of therapy. This workshop is a part of an educational series and is not considered therapy. Please consult with your therapist about what interventions are right for you. Participants: The group is open to teenagers (ages 15 and up) with OCD that are currently in treatment or have graduated from treatment. Topics will vary slightly based on age and interest. Dates: The group meets for 6 weeks on Wednesday's from 5:00pm - 6:00pm (PST) in North Berkeley (exact location to be given after completion of registration process). After the six weeks there is a two week break and then there is an option to commit to another 6 weeks. Please email [email protected] for the next start date. The process involves revisiting disturbing memories, reprocessing trauma so it is no longer stuck, and replacing the distress with a positive thought instead.
