In late June, the DMI Vets employee resource group (ERG) hosted a talk on "Leveraging Military Skills for a Lasting Career." The session was led by DMI Vets members Victor Giordano, Senior Director Project Management, National Security, and Michael Grey, Senior Project Manager, National Security. The talk aimed to help both veterans and hiring managers recognize the value of military experience in civilian careers. “One of the strongest traits for many veterans, along with problem-solving, is adaptability—to be able to pivot on a dime and think quickly, to be able to eliminate problems or at least find what the source of a problem is, and identify a solution to that problem,” said Michael. The engaging session underscored veterans' often exceptional workplace adaptability, ingrained understanding of tight-knit teamwork, capacity for clear communication, and strong dedication to achieving objectives. Key Insights from Helping Over 1500 Service Members and Military Spouses Since 2016, I've helped over 1500 service members and military spouses find meaningful employment through Hire Heroes USA. Networking can open doors that might otherwise remain closed. When you apply for a role online try and find someone who works at the company / the hiring manager on LinkedIn- reach out and let them know you applied. Tailor Applications: Customize your resume and cover letter for each job. Companies rely heavily on applicant tracking systems, which identify candidates who are a good fit for the role. While it may take about an hour for each application, the effort will pay off. Utilize Resources: The government often doesn't adequately prepare service members for their transition. This gap is why Hire Heroes USA exists. Take advantage of available resources and support programs designed specifically for veterans and military spouses. Ask questions, come prepared, and show genuine interest in the role and the company. Stay Resilient: Maintain a positive attitude and learn from rejections. Job seeking is challenging and often takes longer than expected. Stay focused and don't give up—when one door closes, another will open. Self-Reflect: Stay true to yourself. Job seeking is not just about qualifications but also about personality and cultural fit. Sometimes, the more likable candidate who fits well with the company culture gets the role. Be kind in all your interactions with organizations. Helping others find meaningful employment has been a rewarding experience.
