The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued several significant rules in May 2024, focusing on different environmental aspects. Here are the highlights: Legacy Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Surface Impoundments and CCR Management Units: This rule aims to address groundwater contamination risks associated with coal ash disposal. It establishes groundwater monitoring, corrective actions, and closure requirements for all CCR management units at regulated facilities, regardless of when the coal ash was placed​ (US EPA)​. Methane and Harmful Air Pollution from Oil and Natural Gas Operations: The EPA finalized a rule to significantly reduce methane emissions and other pollutants from oil and gas operations. This includes New Source Performance Standards for new, modified, and reconstructed sources, and Emissions Guidelines for existing sources. This action is part of a broader strategy to mitigate climate change impacts​ (US EPA)​. Consumer Confidence Report Rule Revisions: The EPA updated the Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) rule to improve the readability and accessibility of annual drinking water quality reports. Starting in 2027, water systems serving over 10,000 customers will be required to distribute these reports twice a year.
