You’re interested in data mining. What’s the best way to get started?
Beyond real world scenarios, part of my learning process is experimenting in "safe spaces" that you also enjoy. For example, many years ago when I wanted to learn R, I worked on Sabermetrics projects using baseball data. When I wanted to learn distributed web scraping and regular expressions, I started looking at data from the US Chess Federation website. When I wanted to learn pySpark, I started processing data from that massive dataset I collected, looking to answer questions I found interesting. Starting to learn by taking on stuff from work can 1. Be risky and 2. Lead to work fatigue. Have fun with learning and take risks. Also....Google / Reddit / StackOverflow is very much your friend.

What do you do if you want to revolutionize data analysis techniques as a data mining professional?
Become a business domain expert. Analytics is just decision support. You need to deeply understand how decision makers want to make decisions, what they need / want to consider. Once you know this, you can focus on how data mining and analytics come together to lead to better actions.

You’re struggling to work with a team on a data visualization project. What’s the best way to move forward?
Struggling with stakeholders is nothing new and it's nothing to do with your abilities or process, it's aboit influence. The ancient Greeks understood that there's 3 ways to influence: Pathos, Ethos, Logos. Understand HOW your stakeholders can be influenced. Technical people tend to try Logos (appeal to logic), that the strength of ideas alone should be enough. Spoiler: it usually isn't. Understand if you have the Ethos (appeal to authority) to be able to lean on "trust me", "I have a track record of success", etc... sounds like you don't. Pathos (appeal to emotion) is likely where you struggle. Understand your stakeholders' business challenges, their fears, anxieties, and help them be comfortable that your ideas will help them.

Led cross functional team that conceived, built, and globally rolled out an Excel-based analysis tool to assist managers in interpreting, visualizing, and determining trends from their 2013 Genzyme Employee Engagement Survey results. The impressive tool was lauded by Genzyme's VP of Human Resources, Global Operations Excellence Leader Network, Site Survey Champions and managers using the tool.
