Health care leaders are often surprised to learn that their operations contribute significantly to a warming climate. In addition to their roles as responders to and victims of extreme weather events, health care organizations have an obligation to reduce their substantial greenhouse gas emissions as part of their overall mission to do no harm and to improve health. Representing close to one fifth of the U.S. gross domestic product, the health care sector can use its purchasing power to drive the transition to clean energy and a low-carbon supply chain for the rest of the nation. Moreover, much of the shift in focus to preventive models of care and safer, higher-quality care that reduces unnecessary utilization will naturally produce lower carbon footprints. With the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, nonprofit organizations can now use the new tax credit provisions for renewable energy to support desired investments in buildings, energy infrastructure, and transportation, among others. Health care organizations and their global value chains can be influential and important catalysts for the journey to a net-zero carbon future. Here, the authors share recommendations for how leaders can build climate-smart strategies that take advantage of tax incentives and drive changes that can both energize their employees and build a more resilient system to care for their communities.

  • Health Care's Role in Anchoring Community Health and Resilience

    Barr Foundation

As critical service providers and the largest employers in metro Boston and statewide, the health care sector is uniquely positioned to support the health and resilience of our communities in a world facing increasing climate disruption. But recent extreme weather events have exposed the frailty and deep interdependence of our infrastructure systems, and proven health facilities must take care of themselves AND act as anchor institutions to sustain their communities.

  • Leadership in the Storm

    Barr Foundation

After a dangerous and costly winter storm season ending with four Nor'easters in three weeks following multiple hurricane and wildfire disasters, common sense says climate change is accelerating. It is putting our entire region and our health care systems on the front lines of what's been called the greatest public health threat of the century.

Hired at a time when BMC was at the brink of receivership and tasked with the development of a new real estate strategy that would help put the organization onto a path of financial sustainability, I formulated what became known as BMC's Campus Redesign project. Considered to be one of the most complex construction and real estate initiatives ever undertaken within an active hospital, the project consolidated BMC's two campuses into a single footprint and monetized the excess real estate to help fund the entire initiative. The project required over 40 phases of construction within the busiest level 1 trauma center in the northeast U.S. while executing a deferred portfolio sale of the campus to be vacated so as to avoid the expense of a lease-back and associated real estate taxes. The finished project produced a completely transformed BMC campus with one of the most modern hospital campuses in the region while realizing over $30 million of annual operating and lease savings. In addition, it resulted in BMC being named one of the top 25 Greenest hospitals in the U.S. six years running.
