Abortion is currently banned in 14 states and 6 states have early gestational limits between 6 weeks and 15 weeks in effect. Nearly all of these bans include exceptions, which generally fall into four categories: to prevent the death of the pregnant person, when there is risk to the health of the pregnant person, when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, and when there is a lethal fetal anomaly. Some states have more than one abortion ban or restriction in place. The maps below illustrate the exceptions in each state’s most restrictive gestational limit or total ban. We've long known that under and uninsured people will prefer the emergency room as their site of care. The availability of urgent care centers has attempted to take some of the burden off the ER department, as well as provide access to care for those who cannot see their PCP on demand. Yet we still see certain demographics choosing to frequent the ER over urgent care. Why is this still happening, and what SDOH metrics could we put in place to a) track these cases that could have been urgent care visits, and b) develop patient-facing solutions to reduce ER visits? #healthequity #emergencymedicine #chicago #legacy
