This charger is unavailable. Charger reliability continues to be the hot topic in the world of EV adoption - whether it’s on the go charging, multi-unit residences, or commercial and fleet installations. However, it’s rare that people actually discuss the underlying causes of this reliability. In fact, even in the industry most people seem to still be pointing the figure at “network issues”. I’ve been to many conferences where people put up slides showing “80% of issues are network related”. I’ve quoted these stats myself. But what is a network issue? And why doesn’t this get discussed more often? The challenge is that networking is complicated and for EV charging we historically haven’t had visibility into its component parts. For OCPP charging there are three key connections that are required to have a good experience: Internet to Access Point (The wide area or WAN connection - think AT&T), Access Point to Charger (The local area or LAN connection - think WiFi router), and Charger to OCPP server (your charging ‘network’). The problem is that when any one of these components falters, in a traditional OCPP setup, you get a “charger offline” - all the issues look the same! Will rebooting the charger fix the problem? Do you need to reset the modem? Call Verizon? This lack of clarity is the biggest reason that “networking” is the biggest issue. Without visibility, it turns into an (expensive) game of finger pointing. The better approach is to have a solution that allows you to diagnose these problems separately. Imagine a world where your chargers can tell you which part of their network stack is the issue. If we want to solve the “charger offline” problem, that seems like an important first step. ----- We will be at the EV & Charging Expo in Toronto this week at booth 126 - come say hi and chat about charging.
