Are these news organizations limiting their futures for a seemingly brighter today? Financial Times, POLITICO and now my former employer The Wall Street Journal have all signed deals with OpenAI to be compensated for using their news. Other news organizations such as The New York Times have sued OpenAI and Microsoft for training AI models using their news articles, violating copyright laws. I'm not sure what the right answer is, but news organizations don't have the best record managing new technology's impact on business models. And AI is much more competitive a technology than the internet or social media, which still required the underlying news platform. Tech companies have not shown a propensity to protect the Fourth Estate before, regularly prioritizing profits over the importance of independent journalism. It's highly unlikely they'll make that choice in the future. Just look at the current battle between OpenAI and actress Scarlett Johansson: when she said they couldn't use her voice, they seemingly went ahead and did it anyway though they say the voice is based on a different actress. These may be uncharted waters when it comes to AI, but not when it comes to what ends businesses will go to to win. That is well-established practice. What do you think? #media #AI
