What are the main challenges and risks of nuclear waste management and disposal?
Most people ignore that long radioactive decay means less radioactivity, while short half-life means very high radioactivity. This makes it a lot easier to handle radioactive waste than other toxic substances, as storing it for a while reduces the danger. The high-level waste is vitrified, which means it won't dilute in water, unlike the toxic waste coming from solar or wind landfilled junk which passes to the groundwater, ending in food, our bodies, and our children's. Radiation sources are actually like a fireplace on a freezing cold night. If you get too close, you receive too much heat and you get injured, but if you get too far, you will get injured too by the lack of it. (https://lnkd.in/gfeU9dN2).

What are the main challenges and risks of nuclear waste management and disposal?
The waste should be a chief selling point for nuclear energy, particularly for those who care about the environment: There’s not very much of it, it’s easily contained, it becomes safer with time and it can be recycled. Note the current nuclear waste can be reprocessed in Candu, breeder, or molten salt reactors. It is stored simply because, at this time, it is more economical. And, France has been recycling it for decades. Radiation of fully spent fuel goes down below safe levels found naturally in many places on Earth after 150-300 years. To put this into perspective, the heavy metals used in solar panels and chemicals in turbine blades remain chemically toxic to the environment and our health until the end of time, a lot more.

Search And Rescue Transponder for Galileo Satellites
-
Project Manager for the design and production of the SAR repeaters. Europe’s Galileo navigation satellites host SAR search and rescue repeaters. These can pick up UHF signals from emergency beacons aboard ships and aircraft or carried by individuals, then pass them on to local authorities for rescue.
