This simple lesson was taped to my mirror for years. It was the first message in my mind and soon became a daily prayer for assistance. Being the type of person who adds value to the lives of those around them means positively impacting others through your actions, words, and demeanor. Zig emphasized offering genuine support and encouragement to help others achieve their goals and overcome challenges. Go out of your way to show empathy and understanding by listening actively and being present in conversations. Be quick to share your knowledge and expertise to help others grow and learn, but not in a boastful manner. Most importantly, look for opportunities to perform acts of kindness, no matter how small, to brighten someone’s day. This is the most powerful inspiration you can provide to others by setting a positive example and demonstrating integrity and resilience. Thank you Zig! Why Schools Should Celebrate the Juneteenth Holiday Juneteenth, a blend of June and 19,commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It offers a unique opportunity to enhance the understanding and appreciation of African and Black history and culture within educational systems. The recognition of Juneteenth as a national holiday in our schools can drive curriculum changes that include a more comprehensive coverage of history, for Black history is American history. Our children need to know more about their heritage from credible and unbiased sources. Moreover, understanding the historical context of Juneteenth helps students appreciate the significance of freedom and civil rights. It also provides a platform for discussing broader themes of racial justice, equity, and the ongoing impact of systemic racism. For Black students, Juneteenth serves as a source of pride and empowerment. Recognizing and celebrating their heritage within the educational context can bolster their sense of identity and self-worth It also allows educators to connect the dots between enslavement, the Civil War, Reconstruction, the Civil Rights Movement, and contemporary racial justice issues. This contextualization helps students understand the long trajectory of the Black freedom struggle and its relevance to current social and political issues. Most importantly, educating students about Juneteenth helps counteract misinformation and stereotypes about Black history and culture. Here are three engaging activities and lessons to help you celebrate Juneteenth with middle school students, according to twinkl.com.ng: 1. Historical Timeline Activity: Create a timeline of events leading up to Juneteenth. Include critical moments such as the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, which ONLY applied to the Confederacy, significant battles of the Civil War, and the arrival of Union troops in Galveston. 2. Interactive Discussions: Classroom Debates: Host debates on the impact of the Emancipation Proclamation, the long delay in enforcing the proclamation, the ongoing struggles for civil rights, and the idea of only Black Americans being off from work on Juneteenth. Guest Speakers: Invite local historians, African American community leaders, or Civil Rights activists to speak to your class about the importance of Juneteenth and its relevance today 3. Creative Projects: Art Projects: Encourage students to create artwork representing freedom and equality.
