Here is why you should consider it. - It allows us to understand the questions the journalist is asking. - It allows us to hear what you are saying—how you position certain statements, how you talk about the organization, and the words you use to describe your products and services. - It allows us a shortcut to gaining your insight, which can give us ideas for furthering your brand. One of the first lessons I learned when I entered the PR industry was that public relations can't just be about blindly pitching media without fully understanding the story. You need to strive to be a subject matter expert. Early on, I didn't understand the importance of FULLY immersing myself in the companies I represented—their products, functionalities, the mechanics behind their operations, and their business models. Achieving this depth of knowledge requires genuine commitment. There is no room for faking it when it comes to representing your clients. That’s why I’ve also learned that hiring into the PR field is a skill of its own: You have to make sure whoever comes on board is ready to learn. The most impactful PR professionals are keen learners who are always looking to uncover more, build on what they know, and appreciate the things they don’t know (yet). Being in PR (especially B2B Tech and Financial PR) means being comfortable with the uncomfortable .... and committing to learning.

As we look to a Fall full of amazing leaders and courageous, childless cat ladies I ask all journalists, PR people and thought leaders to PLEASE stop saying “female leader” when talking about incredible women at the helm of big brands, innovative tech and even, potentially, the country. They are executives, visionaries and bosses. That’s it. I’m not the first to say this and I won’t be the last. But change only happens when the new normal is repeated over and over again. So, Afia TV felt (and rightfully so) the need for balance in the conversation about the truth or myths behind the impression that Big Brands were snubbing South East Events. After sending multiple invites to representatives of these brands, only two honored the invitation. I was present in the studio and at the end of the conversation, I stood up with some key conclusions, which I would love to share: 1. National Brands actually are snubbing the South East, and everywhere else except Lagos; 2. The claims of budgetary constraints and ill-preparedness of Events Planners is baseless and pitiable; 3. Indigenous Brands (especially those considered as home grown) don't believe the local events industry is worth patronizing; 4. A proper structure and classification mechanism is necessary to help put non-Lagos events on the map. 5. Insecurity, the IPOB/Nnamdi Kanu saga has done irreparable damage to the image, perception and economy of the South East, providing a strong and plausible excuse for investors to steer clear. This perception may last for a very long time; 6. Brand Representatives in the South East & other places are also culpable in the wrong impressions about the true situations on ground which has greatly disrupted the ecosystem. 7. Event organizers should stop playing the victim and find alternatives, understanding that there is no help coming. If one must thrive, either you self sponsor or collaborate or close up; 8. Not everyone must organize an event.

Find A tribe that can become YOUR tribe. During our year-end corporate retreat in 2021, I led the team at Mosron Communications to do an audit: how did the clients we worked with during the year come to us? Why? Because once patterns are identified, it is easy to replicate. We found the pattern: about 45% of our new clients in 2021 came through referrals from friends on WhatsApp groups I was in. So, in 2022 I took very deliberate steps to find more communities to join. Then in 2023, I took it a notch higher and decided to join and volunteer in high value business communities with members who are more successful, more enlightened, globally mobile and operating across diverse industries in different economies. Why? When you become the loudest/most successful/most [add any other word], in your group - it is an indication that you are on your way to redundancy if you don’t seek other challenging spaces. One key result? Exposure. Sometimes, just listening to conversations broadens your mind, challenges your thinking and refines your articulation. Another benefit for me is that I found a safe space to vent about my business frustrations within a group of people who can intimately relate, given that we all face similar challenges. “But Tolu, you should try to grow together with your friends.” Absolutely! But remember, just like in marriage, it would be grossly irresponsible to expect one person/group of persons to meet ALL your emotional/social/religious/financial/ material needs. Your career/business growth is YOUR personal responsibility. Pursue it with all diligence, leveraging data to make decisions - particularly business decisions.
