It's time for a change. Hats off to Peter Cappelli in the article below for shining some truth on the evolution needed in the workforce. I've been saying for years that the FLSA needs to be updated. (Things have changed a bit since 1938 - just sayin'!) We're human beings, not human doings. And the remote workforce (favored by 65% of the workers according to one study) should allow us to "be" and "do" when it's best for us. IMO, the FLSA, as it's written now, hinders hourly employees (55.6% of the population according to BLS) from the best opportunities of "being." Yes, there are many ways to look at this, and I realize it's much easier for some industries and nearly impossible for others. But where it IS possible, surely we can figure out how to treat humans like humans. I work in a Results Only Work Environment (ROWE). This means that I have goals to reach and targets to hit, and I'm trusted to get the job done. That means if I want to go grocery shopping at 10:00 am and work until 8:00 pm, that's OK. If I work 4 hours one day and 10 hours the next two days, that's OK. If I take off early on a Friday and finish up my project on a Sunday, that's OK. In short, I'm treated like a trusted adult. Some weeks I work 30 hours. Some weeks I work 60 hours. I'm able to spend less time commuting and more time with my fiancé. Our team works together to accomplish tasks and overcome issues. As a result, I feel respected, valued, productive, and so so happy. I am able to BE my best self and DO my best work when and where works best for me on a daily basis. CHROs are uniquely positioned to represent employees and employers, but many CEOs don't understand their role. These leaders are more than just administrators of workplace policies; they have become strategic partners to CEOs and other high-level leaders, often taking on the responsibility of culture, inclusion, and even AI initiatives. I know we'll start to see monumental organizational changes when CEOs begin to recognize that HR chiefs serve two sets of internal stakeholders. I’ve personally experienced it with some amazing CEOs.
