Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar Ecuador
Activities and Societies: Fulbright Scholar - Sociolinguistics (Ecuador) Research in Linguistic Policy.
I did all the coursework for my Master's degree in Latin American Studies at this grad school in Ecuador while doing research for my Fulbright grant in sociolinguistics (sounds fancy; just means how language is used in society). Mostly I was curious about societal representations of gender and ethnicity in Spanish, and how Quichua influenced Ecuadorian Spanish, but maybe the coolest thing I learned was that Jabba the Hut speaks broken Quichua in the Star Wars movies.

The worst thing you can do if you want to learn languages fluently is to do what I did at this university and take them all at once (during my year abroad). I was running from one language class straight into another and my brain was stretched in way too many directions at a time. I would conjugate Italian verbs as if they were Japanese. My German sounded like Arabic. I was in language nerd heaven, but thanks to all my hard work, I speak none of them well today. Alas, I'll always have those…

This was my first semester abroad trip to Ecuador. One of the professors at this university happened to have studied in Central Illinois where I'm from, at the University of Illinois - Champaign-Urbana. I talked with him a few times about various topics and he even kindly wrote a letter of reference for me. He later went on to become the President. Not of the university. Of the Republic of Ecuador. His name was Rafael Correa. Life lesson: treat people nicely, because you just never know when…

The thing I remember the most about this place in Cuernavaca, aside from the flowers growing over the walls and the street tacos just outside it, was an American man in his late 70s who came there to learn Spanish. He knew nothing when he started, and everyone was in awe of how open he was to learning at that age in life. His accent in Spanish was, er, let's say "heavy," but he paid no mind. He was easily 50 years older than the average (college-aged) student. If we can look past the Hawaiian…

He was easily 50 years older than the average (college-aged) student. If we can look past the Hawaiian shirts he wore every day (which we sadly cannot, as they were quite vivid), he was pretty much my idol. Also, this was the first time in my life that I ventured outside of the United States, albeit only as far as Mexico. It was a great place to study Spanish.

Activities and Societies: Regents Scholar, Meistersinger Scholar, Symphony Pianist, Castle Singers
Went to college on a piano scholarship. Originally a music composition and Spanish double major, I dropped the music major after my advisor told me I wasn't going to hack it in the music world and should focus on Spanish instead. Ouch. But she was right! Minor in Intercultural Communication.
